As is traditional, it's a day early.

So this sure was a year, huh?

Let's do the game tally first.

This year, I completed 44 games and abandoned 5.
That compares out like this:

2012 - 38 Complete, ?? Abandoned
2013 - 21 Complete, ?? Abandoned
2014 - (did not post, bad year for me) - 29 Complete / 4 Abandoned
2015 - 67 Complete, 6 Abandoned
2016 - 44 Complete, 5 Abandoned
2017 - 102 Complete, 13 Abandoned
2018 - 88 Complete, 16 Abandoned

...and man, this sure FELT like a second 2016 in a lot of ways. I lost energy, I lost faith, and I lost my will to play games for a long while towards the end. I'm still recovering that, and considering if I want to keep tracking stuff. I probably will, but I might be a little less zealous about playing games for their own sake...

...or maybe not? After all, after 2016 I had the gonzo-go-nuts year of 102 games in 2017. Who can truly say what the future holds for any of us?

Not I, I do not pretend to that kind of wisdom.

Anyway, I may have been depressed towards the end of the year but looking back? This wasn't that bad a year. The start and midpoint weren't bad at all. E3 dropped some major bombs for the year to come (PHANTASY STAR ONLINE 2 BABY I'M THERE) and City of Heroes returned from the dead a half-dozen times in one week and then STAYED UP.

My numb heartbroken burned-out depression here in the September-December region is almost gone and I'm starting to get circulation back in my emotions. It's time for a new year and I'm gonna step forward to meet it with both arms open even if it gets me stabbed in the gut, because y'know what? It's what I do best.

...is ... embrace things and get stabbed. Yep that's me. Gettin' stabbed over and over again. Just gonna hug a knife.

This analogy was bad and I feel bad about it. We will never speak of it again.

Anyway.

It's not all games. Towards the end of this year there was the giant-ass Pokemon Movie Megathon which has turned into a "whenever-we-can" anime/movie/cartoons/whatever watch session with a dear friend.

This has been emotionally clensing as we float in a Judgement-Free Zone and just watch whatever the two of us decide on with no "ew why" or "god your taste sucks" or "you're watching it the WRONG WAY you have to NITPICK THIS" tossed around. It is the antithesis of the modern fandom internet and it is a blessing on my soul.

I was gonna find a thematic song to wrap the year up, but I frankly forgot.
Instead I leave you with one of my favorite songs this year, Battle Beast's "Unfairy Tales".

What makes us human is now on sale
crushed for the sake of unfairy tales
For twisted dreams, for endless greed
We want it back!

As we enter 2020, we're on the brink of a lot of changes. I've got hope and some optimism for a change. I'm going to keep experimenting with cooking, I'm going to keep striving to make progress on something (anything) daily, I'm gonna keep writing here and I'm gonna get back to playing the games that catch my attention. I will protect the people and things I love at whatever cost that requires.

2020 is going to be the year I start fighting to hold on to my dreams again.
I want them back.
