Winter wrap-up, winter wrap-up!

...*ahem* Sorry. Yeah, this post is a little premature, but I'm declaring this year of blogging done for me!

This year I verifiably finished (meaning I remember finishing/documented finishing) 35 games, which is kind of a major accomplishment for me. Part of the reason I started the whole Hat Project thing was to bolster myself. For a few years now I've felt like I was constitutionally incapable of actually finishing ANYTHING, to the point where I'd feel seriously depressed and wonder if something was genuinely wrong with me. This year in July, I decided to stand up and put my money where my blog was. I started writing about games I was playing, and playing one at a time until I won.

If I was going to fail, I would document why and hopefully learn something about myself, and if I was going to succeed, I would document that too and have something to look back on and feel proud about. This also kept me writing, which has been... really important to me for a long time, and which I keep swearing off and going back to. In a way this entire thing is therapy of a sort, and it's therapy where I get to play all that crap I spent money on and have been too depressed to touch. So it's double-therapy. My self-esteem is higher, and my moods are brighter. I'm feeling better than I have in a long time.

By the way, you folk have been really, really supportive even though I've been relentlessly clogging your Livejournal feed with derpery for the last six months. Thank you, again thank you, and I salute you. Hopefully I am at least a little bit entertaining.

So where do I go from here? Damn fine question. Next year I'm going to keep up the Hat Project, and I have a big ol' list of JRPGs I'm going to be salting the pot with, including every single game you folk have rec'd for me to play. I'm no longer afraid to tackle a long game for fear I'll get bored and wander off, so there will be a number more of these long-form writeups coming. I guess that's either a warning or encouragement to keep reading, depending! There will also be more Nancy Drew and George Fayne and Bess Marvin, that lovable trio of crimefighting awesomehood. There will be minigames and music and magic.

We might solve a mystery, or rewrite history. I'm not ruling out anything here.

Anyway, we're at the end of the year, and that means I should polish up and pass some awards out for the games I played this year!

And with the exception of FF12 – sorry, I could not possibly sit through that, you're made of sterner stuff than I – I sat through every bit and loved it. Thank you for sharing!

If there's one major accomplishment in my life, it's earning the Samurai Shodown 2 intro monologue.
