So yet again my eyes have turned to the PS3. We're strongly considering getting one, now that the price has come down significantly from FIVE HUNDRED NINETY NINE US DOLLARS and back into the realm of what us apartment-dwelling slobs can afford.

Here's a list of what my eyes have been set on, because the woof asked me to write up what I've been looking at.
Exclusives or games with big reasons to own the PS3 version only. Still love the 360, multiplatform releases will probably go to that. Also, Gamefly will account for much of this, I'm thinking.

Top Tier-

Valkyria Chronicles - Wanted this since day one. Not owning it has made me sad. NO LONGER SHALL THIS GO UNSATED. Strategy gunning with the Skies of Arcadia characters, ho!
Atelier Rorona - Hang out bein' an alchemist. Like Recettear, but on Hard Mode. This comes out the 28th.
Disgaea 3: The Absence of Justice - Get up, go to school, end the world. Also do this in the game. (Has insane DLC pack. Is this worth it? Bluh bluh, huge price, bluh bluh, character storm.)
Uncharted / Uncharted 2 - Nolan North's life is actually exactly like these game. True fact.
Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes - AH YOU READY GUYS? PUTYA GUNNZ ON! Also has Ieyasu Tokugawa as a hoodie-wearing ancient Japanese FISTPUNCHER YEAAAAAAAH. MAY MY FFFFISTS UNITE ALL! There is basically no fucking way I'm not going to MAKE OUT with this game when it shows up.
Folklore - From the people who brought you Shin Megami Tensei, a dark story about faeries and Irish people and using motion control to mug monsters for their spiritual powers.
Cross Edge - Strategy crossover RPG madness. Again, I am told this is kind of a horrible grind. "Like an Idea Factory game", I was told. I -love- Idea Factory. There are actually Idea Factory characters IN this thing. Thus, I crave.
Trinity Universe - Basically the same thing as Cross Edge, except a semi-roguelike instead of a strat-RPG. Even MORE niche. Even MORE sexy to me. I am so broken.

Second Tier-

Infamous - Like Prototype, except instead of Venom, you're Electro. I am a superhero whore.
Little Big Planet/LBP2 - With the second game able to play any level made in the first, do I -need- the first? But it's cheaper, and LBP2 is delayed 'til January. Hrm. Anyway. I am also a physics whore.
Heavy Rain - Game from the guy who did Indigo Prophecy, which I enjoyed in spite of/because of it being completely batshit insane. Odds are good that will apply here too. Likely a rental title though.
Eternal Sonata - Not an exclusive, but the PS3 version seems to have more Stuff in it. More stuff in RPG = Better.
3D Dot Game Heroes - Did you like the original Legend of Zelda? Here it is again, but AWESOMER. PIXELS.
Demon's Souls - This game is so hard it may go back in time and stab my grandparents. I'm told it's worth it anyway. (Seriously, you are dead on the box art, and then the TUTORIAL kills you. HARDCORE.)
Yakuza 3 - I am -really- tempted to finish 1 and play 2 first. But... VIOLENCE.
Ratchet and Clank Future - Again, should play the PS2 ones first... but then, yes. Straight to this.
Katamari Forever - Naaaa nanana na naaa naaaa naa...

Low Tier -
Star Ocean: The Last Hope - More Star Ocean. Play as EDGE MAVERICK, a name that makes me want to do a jump-kick.
Lair - I am told by reliable sources that this game is terrible. It also has dragons in it. FUCKING DRAGONS FLYING AROUND GOING RAR I AM A DRAGON. Raaaar. I'm gonna end up playing this thing somehow.
Afrika - Wildlife photography as a video game. Go out on the veldt and play RL Pokemon Snap. I realize this sounds boring, but... I have a weakness for this kind of thing. Remember Everblue 2? Speaking of which...
Aquanaut's Holiday - Only available via import. Dive under the sea. Discover fish and undersea adventure. Downside is it's HOLY GOD expensive. Sigh.
Pain - Yes, a game called Pain. It is about slamming ragdoll physics characters face-first into things. It is downloadable and cheap and did I mention the physics thing I have going?
The Sly Cooper Collection - All three Sly Cooper games. I only own the second. Is it worth picking up the other two? Possibly.
The ICO/SotC Collection - A complete shoe-in for purchase. When it actually y'know comes -out-.
Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom - A budget game about dungeon hacking. ... Look, I like those. This is a last resort though.
Last Rebellion - This is after the last resort. It sounds -interesting-... an RPG with locational body targeting. But it's apparently bad enough that the president of NIS America -apologized- for releasing it. Hrm.

Anyone with a PS3 want to chime in? (No, I will not be talked out of Cross Edge or Trinity Universe.)

I always enjoy it when you're excited about media. <3

I'm not a PS3 owner. Half of those are games i'd like to play, perhaps one day.

Isn't that the console with those monster hunter games everybody likes so much?

Alas, no, as much as I'd love to play a PS3 Monster Hunter. They've been on pretty much everything else: a couple on PS2, several for PSP, one on the Wii, and a Japan-only entry for Windows/360.

You've got a pretty good list here! I personally own and can vouch for the awesomeness of Valkyria Chronicles, Little Big Planet, Heavy Rain (very very polarizing, but I fell into the "liked it" column), 3D Dot Game Heroes, Demon's Souls, Yakuza 3, Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and obviously Aquanaut's Holiday. Pain and Afrika are decent; the former is kind of a one-trick pony but may indeed be more appealing if you're really into physics toys, while the latter is no Aquahol, as nature-porn games go, largely because it doesn't have the same sort of surprisingly tasty story-gravy and the Jeep is a pig to drive. Good fun for a while, though, especially if you can get it cheap.

Additional recommendations, available now: Flower, a downloadable and one of my favorite "art games". IMHO, a must-have at the price. Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, sequel to Tools of Destruction, same again but more, and with some neat time-manipulation puzzles.

Personally beloved but perhaps not your cuppa: Metal Gear Solid 4. Somewhat polarizing, but in my book, a worthy closure to Snake's story. It's very much a fans' game, though; if you're not much for MGS, it won't do anything to change your mind, and it's got Kojima all over it.

Potential sexy for the future: The Last Guardian, next big game from Team ICO. Majin, in which you have a pet giant-monster thing who can hurl you around. Project Dark, another dark fantasy game from From, possibly a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls. Yakuza 4, which has been announced for the US, yay. Yakuza: Of The End, in which the zombie apocalypse comes to Kamurocho, localization potential unknown. Ni no Kuni, a game co-developed with Studio Ghibli, and damn, does it ever look the part. Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage, basically Dynasty Warriors with the punching and the exploding and the hey hey hey.

Kind of amusing to see the clip of Sengoku Basara, given that one of my favorite goofy anime lines comes from a *different* Basara....'Listen to my song!' ;-)

About the only thing in this list I could really chime in on is the Sly Cooper set--unless you're planning to track down the other two PS2 games (I've got all three of them myself...the main games are decent, but I know the Challenges are nigh impossible for me in most cases), I'd say go for it, if only for triple the hypno-tail. ;-)

And I definitely echo glashuhd's comment on Flower--it's low-cost, and from what my brother tells me, a nice, relaxing, *pretty* game...and I hear similar from every other PS3 owner I know. Worth the price by all reports.

A friend of mine is a mod on the LBP/LBP2 site... according to her, the second one will be a far better purchase based entirely on backwards compatability and all the new things it can do.

Scattered comments:
  • I wasn't really sold on Katamari Forever (and I've been using the original KD theme as my ringtone); the original was a blast of fresh air, but the most recent have a little bit of 'hey, did someone leave the door open?' about them.
  • On the other hand, I'd argue for moving 3d Dot Game Heroes up a notch - from what I know of you, it's really Your Kind Of Game. Except that it needs more giant robots. But I really think you'll fall for it pretty hard.
  • Another recommendation for Flower, which is probably my favorite game of the last several years. I suspect it may fall a little flat with some people, but I'd definitely say try it at least.
  • Everyday Shooter is 'just' an arena shooter, so if you're not a fan then you can safely pass it by, but if you care for the genre at all it's an absolutely fantastic and fascinating example. A great illustration of how much visuals and music (and a few small tweaks) can change the feel of identical core gameplay. Super Stardust HD isn't quite as 'arty', but that's not necessarily a bad thing, and it's still a fine frantic game.
  • And the various Pixeljunk games, though really I can only speak firsthand for Pixeljunk Eden and Pixeljunk Shooter - I'm a huge, huge fan of Eden, though, and it's really like nothing else out there. Pac-Man sort-of meets Bionic Commando in the last world of Rez? I don't know that there's any reasonable way of describing it, but it's well worth the checking out.

I'm not sure whether it says more about the system or me that I bought this $300 piece of hardware mostly to play $10 games on...

I don't know if I'd say 'overproduced' - my personal aesthetic just tends to be very minimalist stuff, and particularly with my attention span I shy away from games that take too long, so I tend to prefer bite-sized experiences. I'm actually a little jealous of folks who can play something like Disgaea, or hell, even the average JRPG; I just never seem to manage. (Another point in 3DDGH's favor - my playing any game for that long is a bit of a rarity!)
