xyzzysqrlIf you're standing here in far distant futurepast of 2022 and you want to know what was cool and good about the late nineties internet, you could probably do worse than to play Hypnospace Outlaw. It's all there, a million billion stories on a couple hundred pages, hackers and knitters and teachers and losers. Viruses, virtual pets and people so passionate about their single hyperfocus that they need to tell the world about it, all in conflict, all rich with personalities and personality conflicts.
Until the sequel comes out I genuinely don't believe there's ANYthing like this game out there. Broken Reality comes close but it's a different vibe, a different kind of internet, a different kind of earnest cynicism.
I kind of genuinely don't know how to explain this game except that it is the Geocities of the Futurepast and you're an Enforcer whose job it is to manage copyright infringment and cyberbullying, but it goes deeper than that. If you just do your job (like I did) you'll miss dozens and dozens of pages (like I did), and that's okay but I wish I hadn't.
Just hang out in Hypnospace. That's what it's there for.

Date: 2022-12-22 10:44 am (UTC)...well the puzzles were a little rough and I got help from chat in a couple places but they were still worth doing. And if you just want to vibe, it's great. I only noticed now that I'm offstream and not talking all over it that if you sit long enough an old-school screensaver kicks in. It's STILL surprising me!
