This was my first Far Cry game, I start to write, and then I remember that no in fact I have played Far Cry 2. Not all the way through, but I played a lot of it way back when and I remember it as a grim depressing meditation on whether an external mercenary force can actually accomplish anything in an internal conflict or if the mere act of intervention will fuck everything up and make life worse for everyone involved.

Far Cry 6 is ... uh, it's basically that but it has a sense of humor now. You can marginally improve life but no matter what, the wrong people will die alongside the right people and they will often lie in the same graves. Taking action is bloody and doing nothing allows atrocities. The world is violent and unfair. But you can dress a crocodile in a sports jersey and swing around on a grappling hook while you guard a rap band screaming rage against the establishment, so it's also fun, y'know?

Post-game, after you've killed the regime leader and it's been made clear that nothing can fix the country, you unlock "Insurgency" mode where you can deliberately abandon areas you've cleared out to let the enemy come back so you can retake the area. Every week a new threat rises and you get to go shoot it for rewards. Truly war can last forever if you want it to.

I make it sound like I hated this game but I played it for 60 hours and honestly had a great time, and will probably play the upcoming expansion pack and some of the postgame.
It's just all REAL BLEAK in retrospect. I respect that. It's at least a stance, if not a statement.
