Recordkeeping: Dragon Quest 3 COMPLETE
Aug. 27th, 2020 08:44 amThe idea that I could say anything remotely new or even insightful about this game is kind of hilarious. Dragon Quest 3 was played to death, discussed to death, deconstructed and rebuilt and idolized while I was still a kid.
Still, I've been wanting to have played all the Dragon Quests and the first step towards having done something is actually doing it, so I did it. And y'know, it holds up. It holds up a lot better than Dragon Quest 2 did, actually...
...aside, what the FUCK that was EARLIER THIS YEAR?! I was looking in 2018 for it, like y'know HOW LONG AGO IT FEELS LIKE. ah god what is happening to TIME
Anyway!
The class system provides a LOT of much-needed variety in gameplay, there's so much to explore and the game is cheerfully freeform once you pass a certain point... if I had a complaint it's that you get the 'airship' analogue -right- before you never need it again, so there's this cool cutscene and a big build up and then you, like, take the bus to FinaleLand and never touch it again?? Oops.
Well, later games will continue improving on the systems here, but this is ... still such a gem of a thing. This is where it all came together, IMO.
