I'm unlikely to do a 100% blog of this game, but a couple of the reactions I got were like "What." so I figured I'd keep up a BIT of documentation on how this game goes, because my previous Tales Of blog was this enormous heap of posts nobody read that sprawled all over the place. I'm gonna keep this one compact and tidy.
Asbel Lhant DID in fact join the Knights, and was apprenticed under a scruffy sort of guy called Malik Caeser which is KIND OF LIKE naming a character King Rex Royalman but whatever. Anyway he's not royal in any way, which bugs me. He's just a really good teacher and Asbel has obvious respect for him.
Asbel also develops the ability to shoot lightning bolts out of his fists though. That's not because of the training. Malik uses Earth magic. Nobody's sure WTF is up with Asbel's lightning fists.
Just as Asbel gets home from his "You're gonna be a knight" final training run, Cheria shows up. She's no longer terminally ill, for MYSTERIOUS REASONS, and can use healing magic for MYSTERIOUS REASONS. Also Asbel's father is dead. So much for that "I hate you, Dad" plotline. FFX did it, we can move on.
Everyone (except Malik) tromps back to Asbel's home town and after some wrestling with his inner self, Asbel decides to retire from the Knights after like one hour of actual service and come home to rule as local Lord, because it's the right thing to do and also because an invading army (from a country called Fendel) is laying siege to the place.
The army nearly kills Asbel and Cheria with a tank, but they suddenly burst into glowing and Sophie pops out to do karate to the tank. I still don't know if Sophie is like... a killer Mega Man android lady from the future or what? She's emotionless, she doesn't remember dying, she doesn't remember she's called Sophie, but seeing her friends again makes her feel strangely warm inside. Also she seems to have stored her ... uh, self-energy inside Our Heroes for safekeeping, which is a COOL TRICK if you can do it.
So New Sophie tags along, like the last seven years never happened. This is actually weirdly traumatic for the party because that old scar wasn't exactly healed over yet and now there's a fresh reminder tagging along behind them, familiar enough to evoke memories but different enough to dash hopes.
Anyway that doesn't matter because theFire Nation invading army is still attacking. In the middle of it, leading an army from a THIRD nation (Strahta), Lt. Hubert Oswell (he's dropped his family name of Lhant) shows up and drives off the invaders. He then declares...
...you remember how Asbel dropped his childhood dream of being in the Knights so he could take up his vacant father's Lord seat?
... that given that there is NO FIT RULER and given that Hubert has Lhant blood, he is now the ruler of Lhant and they are in an alliance with Strahta, so the Strahtan soldiers are just gonna be stationed and quartered there.
Asbel is kinda like "WTF."
Hubert is like "I have no brother, you did nothing while they sent me off for adoption, screw off and play knight some more okay?"
Asbel is like "No really WTF."
Hubert is like "FIGHT ME SCRUBLORD I'M POLITICALLY RIPPED."
Asbel loses. It's a "Loser Leaves Town" match, so Asbel leaves town. Back to the capital in disgrace.
For... reasons I am not clear on, soldiers from what seems to be ANOTHER faction follow Asbel and Sophie to the capital, and it turns out everyone thinks Richard is dead, except he's not dead he's hiding in the crypts, and Asbel and Sophie accidentally save his life (again) from assassins so he joins up because his Uncle Cedric is trying to kill him. (WATCH OUT, RICHARD! A POOOOOOISONOUS UNCLE!) His current plan is to run off and find a friendly Duke he knows and raise an army, because fuck it we're Game of Thrones now.
And that's where I've left off so far!
