Recordkeeping: Under the Skin COMPLETE
Mar. 22nd, 2016 10:23 pmWikipedia said: "Containing science fiction and comedy elements, the main character of the game's story is an extraterrestrial named Cosmi, sent from Planet Mischief to Earth to generally wreak havoc. The game features cameos from some of the cast of one of Capcom's other games, such as an entire level that functions as a parody of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis."
One of my friends said: "This sounds like it was specifically made for you."
I say: "Wow. This is really good. Hard as hell, but good. It's kind of a shame it came out before online multiplayer was really A Thing Consoles Did."
Okay so there's eight levels in this thing and each one pairs you off against an enemy alien in a battle for coins. Your tools are a disguise ray which can store one human-form at a time. Zap a human, pop to a UFO icon, change into the human. Now you have five "moves" to use, these can be anything from blasting out loud karaoke to putting tacks on the ground, firing a bazooka, hucking a bowling ball...
Anyway, you're geared up in a Perfectly Ordinary Human suit. Go terrorize the crowds. They'll drop coins. Collect those. Rack up combos for more coins. Your usual goal is to get more coins in 10 minutes than the other alien, but there are special goals, like reducing your enemy to zero coins or teaming up with the enemy to collect a certain amount of coins in time.
Get hit once, you're in your underwear like Arthur from Ghosts & Goblins. Get hit twice and you lose your disguise entirely, as well as some coins. Now you're back in alien form, EVERYONE IS CHASING YOU, and you're fountaining your coins everywhere every time you get touched. Get back in disguise and go hunt more coins.
Each stage has hazards: The Nemesis from RE3 for example, or sandstorms, or meteor showers, or just bad traffic. Those don't help.
So it's a very weird arena battle game, where you have to split focus between bopping your enemies and setting up combos for coins. It's got sharp, good-looking, goofy cartoon graphics and ... music that didn't actively OFFEND me. Although the voice acting kinda did, but OH WELL no game is perfect.
So! Under the Skin. Surprisingly good. Would probably be better with like-minded multiplayer. Never gonna get a chance there. Shame.
