So, did you start a new town, or go back to Adoraville? I ask because I am wondering how a game like this handles idleness like that.

I had in some ways sort of cheated: I passed the "Keep Adoravil Beautiful" edict at Town Hall before I went into a two-year stasis, so I had no weeds or roaches in town.

So, really, the only differences were that my character had messy hair, one person had moved away and gotten replaced by another, my mailbox had cycled through a huge amount of mail and I probably lost a few holiday-related things, and everyone was surprised to see me.

That's it.

That's not really cheating if the option is, like, right there! I mean why else do they even have a Keep Adoravil Beautiful ordinance?

The weeds do impinge, although it's only really when you wind the clock around by a few centuries that it goes full tilt. (And even then, it's recoverable, if rather tedious)
