So you may remember a while ago I spent a large amount of time tagging old posts. Now, why would I spend so much time tagging previous entries anyway? Or get cranky when it doesn't work out? Well, so I can do something like this:
All previous Nancy Drew adventures are available (in reverse chronological order, flip to the last page for the first entry) via the Nancy Drew tag on Livejournal!
Or like this:
Catch up on individual adventures of Nancy Drew you may have missed, or just re-read an old favorite! Again: Last Entry First order...
Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake! (Game 7 in canon.)
The Haunting of Castle Malloy! (Game 19.)
The Secret of the Old Clock! (Game 12.)
The Haunted Carousel! (Game 8.)
Danger By Design (incomplete due to medical/depression reasons, for now!, also Game 14))
The Final Scene! (Game 5.)
Secrets Can Kill: Remastered! (Technically Game 23, remake of Game 1.)
I also want to note that Lani Minella, the voice of Nancy and the voice I will ALWAYS hear Nancy in, is leaving the role as of the next game in the series. Admittedly I am like three games behind in purchases and 20+ games behind in playing, but still. New Nancy. One of those things I just don't know how to react to.
How do you cast the second Nancy Drew? I don't envy her those shoes to fill. I wonder if she'll regenerate on-screen or if they'll just throw a coat over the new VA's microphone until the big reveal.
For now though, let's start up a "new" (actually many years old) Nancy Drew adventure. I was going to play a different one, but... my mood shifted. So instead of the first pick, we're playing...

This here's an older one, game #6, so please enjoy the tiny screenshots. We're rolling!
So what exotic location are we visiting with Nancy this time? Greece? Bavaria? Mars? No! We're goin' to Washington DC, CAPITAL OF AMERICA, for some museum work. Specifically, Nancy has an intern job in the Mayan section of the Beech Hill Museum. She'll be working under one "Joanna Riggs", curator and archeologist. Joanna was involved in the discovery of a strange Mayan monolith...
Ugh, I'm not sure whether to crack 2001 jokes or Dead Space jokes here.
...Anyway, the game kicks off with Joanna showing Nancy one of the "most valuable" (read: stealable) artifacts in the museum. It's a jade carving of King Pacal, who really existed although he wasn't really much of a "king".

I love how Nancy is seen here only as a black shadowy cut-out. SHE IS THE NIIIIGHT!
Anyway, it turns out this piece is so valuable Joanna "practically had to sell her grandmother" to get ahold of it, and when Nancy asks how the museum managed to arrange the purchase of something like that in the first place, Joanna develops an... interesting... facial expression.

Aside from Joanna and the aformentioned Taylor, there isn't much staff on staff at the museum. "We've had to make some cutbacks for budget reasons. In other words, we're really relying on our volunteer staff. Aheh, that is to say: You."
...as in UNPAID? Augh. But no, Nancy is all too eager to take a completely unpaid intern position in the name of FASCINATING KNOWLEDGE. Sigh. Anyway, the only people present are Joanna, Taylor, one "Henrik van der Hune" who works in translation... Joanna's told him she doesn't want to see his pointy van der head until he's got a translation of the glyphs on the monolith... and "Alejandro del Rio", ambassadorial attache to the Mexican Consulate and major thorn in Joanna's side.
Well that sounds like our suspect pool for this one. Now all we need is an actual crime committed, no? Before that, Joanna needs to crow on about the monolith, which was excavated by a "hot young team of mexican and american archeologists". (I'm sorry, did we wander into some kind of extremely niche porn spoof?)
Nancy wonders why the specific mention of nationality, and it's because Joanna believes the importance of a joint effort in excavation is second only to getting the artifacts on display to plenty of people. Which is what MATTERS! Unless you're Alejandro del Rio. Nancy pushes for more on del Rio. Joanna pushes back. She doesn't WANT to talk about HIM.
"Well. Any last advice before I get down to business?" Nancy asks.
Joanna nods. "Semper oobi some boobies!"
What. ... Oh, no, excuse me. The voice actress just sort of ran that together. "Semper ubi sub ubi". An old, terrible joke. Thanks, Joanna. Helpful.
Well, we've got a to-do list off in the office. Let's head over and get crackin' on that. So we head off through the Mayan exhibition...

...and man that is a beautiful and elaborate exhibit, it's several huge sprawling screens and we will have to comb ALL OVER IT for clues later I'm sure... Anyway, through there, into the Employees Only area, into the lab, to our desk... And here's our to-do list.

Oh, just LOOK who the previous research intern was. Y'all remember Sonny Joon, the alien-obsessed doodler guy we always "just miss", last seen in Danger By Design? This was the debut of the running gag, because we're playing out of order. Expect to see more and more of him cropping up in later games.
Looks like he knocked a couple of tedious lines off the to-do, though. Thanks, Sonny.
Let's see. We've got a "priority!" line that deals with Mr. del Rio, and I for one am eager to hear his side of the story. Let's make that a priority indeed. The Addenda to the Loan Agreement... Right, let's see if we can't locate that. It isn't on the desk... Hm. And inside the desk are...

Some chocolate bars. I'd eat these. A knob that probably goes on, uhm, something in the museum. Somewhere. And Sonny's proper sketchbook...

...which looks like it'll make some future puzzles a lot easier. Again, thanks Sonny. No loan agreement though. Let's check back in with Joanna... who sends us off to Henrik. Henrik?

Oh! Henrik!
Henrik was in the lab, which means I got so singleminded in my pursuit of one topic that I neglected to ...er, as he puts it, bobble around like an untethered balloon and click literally everything in my path. Unfortunately he has no idea where the loan agreement is. He CAN tell me about Sonny, who enjoyed setting off the fire alarm for no reason and telling museum patrons that the Mayan civilization were abducted by aliens and that's why they're not around anymore.
Henrik also has really nasty allergies. Thus the dust mask. Finally, he points out that Nancy is expected to explore and become familiar with the museum. Anyone who wants to get in touch will leave voicemail or a note at her desk in the lab, so she should check back often... but until she does, she's expected to really dig into both her work and learning about the Mayans and the museum alike.
Maybe if like we were getting PAID for this, we'd have more motivation to... no, for Nancy KNOWLEDGE is the TRUE MOTIVATION.
For Sonny Joon, however, being a huge dork was the true motivation. See this?

Because I almost didn't. This paper airplane hucked in a random corner of the museum lobby is the incredibly critical loan addendum we're supposed to priority-rush off to the Mexican consulate. ...thanks a LOAD, Sonny. So, out the double-doors, onto the metro...

Majestic. Let's do this. Nancy strolls in and greets Alejandro in spanish before offering him the loan papers. He instantly goes off on a multi-section rant about the CONQUISTADORES and PIRATES of the museum industry! It's about artifacts that belong in Mexico but have never returned to Mexican soil! It's about black market dealers, forging papers to sell artifacts to museums!

"Wow, it's a good thing this is only on loan from Mexico, huh?" Nancy jokes, audibly rattled.
"Even in my country, there are people for whom money talks." he sniffs. "One day, Ms. Drew, I will see these missing valuable treasures returned to my homeland. Even if I must take them back with my OWN TWO HANDS, Nancy."
"Well, I'll need you to sign those papers first."
Tact is for other people. Nancy Drew cares only for getting the job done.
del Rio brushes his hands over the papers, but declines to sign them so Nancy can trot them back. He wants to speak to Joanna later and will take them back himself. No amount of prodding can budge him from this position, so Nancy leaves him on his high horse and heads back to the museum.
NEXT TIME: ...has there been a crime yet? I don't think there's been a crime yet. Oh well. We ... do more unpaid grunt work! Thrill to it, here on SECRET OF HOW DOES SONNY JOON KEEP GETTING EMPLOYED?
(please pay your goddamn interns, people.)

Oh, relax. If anyone can work for free, it's young specialized professionals who have just finished acquiring a staggering amount of crushing debt.
