I have ordered the Playstation 2 remake of the original Romancing SaGa game. (How many of you gamer folk knew it was even out in the US yet?) It'll be here around Friday.

Thus, I have until then to finish all my outstanding obligations, because when I get that, I'm probably going to vanish forever. Or at least until Jamil and Aisha's quest lines are done. Maybe Sif's too. Also Hawke's.

...awcrap, it's already started.

...Anyway, if you've never played a SaGa game before, start with this one. They're worth it. Yeah, I know they generally get asstacular reviews. If you're boneheaded enough to enjoy reading my journal, you might just enjoy a SaGa game or two.

Unlimited Saga was incomprehensible and frustrating. I take it it wasn't the best one to start with?

I've never played it, although I kind of want to because of comments like that. But I'm told that yes, it broke Saga formula and was generally a big stinky pile of poo. The interface sucked, was the major complaint I heard.

Romancing Saga, and Saga Frontier and the like, basically thrive on giving you a big-ass world to wander around in and recruit characters and do quests and so on. The problem is that... it's kind of the Japanese Morrowind. You get "This is what your character wants to accomplish. This is the world. Go. Have fun."

So if you want rigid direction, or... occasionally, if you want a damned CLUE as to what you should be, y'know, DOING, you're out of luck.

But at least in Romancing Saga, the interface won't be in your way.

Is it as good as SaGa Frontier?

I don't have it yet, but I'm -hoping- so. It looks like it opens up the field a lot, so... hey. It -is- a remake of the first one, so I expect it to be more fantasy-oriented and a lot more free-roaming.

I wish I could find my Saga Frontier disc. Sigh.

SaGa Frontier has eaten up hours and hours of my life, and I STILL haven't completed it; I've completed each quest individually, but never all at the same time so I never got to see the 'secret area' you unlock when you do that....

Riki's quest is the one that stops me from doing it again. If I could get dead-certain 5-hit combos on that combo-counting bitch-boss near the end, I'd go for it.... but I can never make it happen right... :(

Sounds to me like I should post my impressions of the game to Sqrlgames, when I've actually got it in my hands, then.

...I'm curious. Have you played Romancing SaGa 3? (Yeah, I know, series-in-order... but there's no connection and the translation is... weak, but passable.) Romancing Saga's really more like that than Frontier.

No, I've only played SaGa Frontier, and had the dire misfortune to pick up SaGa Frontier on the very foolish assumption that it might be something resembling the original. X_x

Well. Try swinging by here and yoinking the Romancing Saga 3 translation. It's a pretty rough and cruddy translation, but it's enough to see what the gameplay's like.
