I have a post part-written about the next main quest plotline, and we're going to do that soon enough... or at least try to. However someone else reminded me that we're going to need every little edge we can get, and there's an easily-accessable edge we haven't yet picked up. Not one that's usable everywhere we'll be going, but one that levels with us. Remember, Xenosa Xizee may be a stranger in a strange land, but every stranger could be a friend you haven't met yet...

We pick up in Jeuno, specifically Upper Jeuno. Because adventurers can just wander into buildings and talk to anyone on the street they feel like, we're chatting with someone named "Luto Mewrilah", which sounds like some kind of weird Mithra themed joke but I swear it isn't.

What she needs from us is to find out if certain people are carrying "A certain type of mirror", a rare treasure they've been looking for and this sounds no dumber than like half the other stuff we get asked to do, so we agree cheerfully. "Pick one person, then see what info you can dig up about them." she offers. Okay wait are we doxxing someone? Because I'm not sure I'm down with that.

Since I know where this is going, I elect to check out ... let's see... a hume girl named Nanako. Nanako's a good name. Every day's great at your Jeuno~

From there we're cut free to go start detective work. Find three NPCs in this whole four-district city who know about Nanako the human! ...yeah no. WIKI AWAY. So we run off to someone who asks about height, and someone who asks about facial features, and...

You can see we're basically programming in the person we want to find. It's clever that way. A little creepy, but clever. Eventually we find someone who JUST HAPPENS to have seen exactly the person we made up out of whole cloth, walking around staring into a mirror.

Luto's delighted to hear we've found someone, a fellow adventurer no less, who might have that mirror they've been looking for. My next job with Luto is to go help find a missing little girl who went out to play and never came back. Asking around town, it comes out that she went out to play near the Eldieme Necropolis. ... Why would you DO THAT. That's just a name that SOUNDS like trouble.

...oh, wait. Child. Trouble. Of course. They're magnetically attracted. We best get out there.

We're not the only ones who had that idea.

Nanako has the "missing child" problem in hand, right up until a skeleton wielding a scythe looms out of the darkness. With a glance at each other, Nanako and Xenosa swing into battle, side-by-side.

They're a solid team, and Xenosa lets Nanako warp out with the young girl.

With the little girl returned to her family, Nanako, Xenosa, and Luto cluster up on the street to discuss what they've learned. Nanako's mirror is the "Glass of All-Seeing", a powerful mirror that can find objects and people. It's been in her family forever, is NOT for sale, and is what led her to Jeuno in the first place. Still, we all seem to work well enough together and she's interested in continuing the partnership...

Which leads smoothly into the next mission. Luto's found another mirror, but is having trouble pinning down just where it is... so Nanako offers to use her mirror to search for it. The Glass of All-Seeing puts the treasure in San d'Oria, but she can't figure out WHERE in San d'Oria. It's like it's being carried around and keeps moving.

With no information other than "It's in elfyville somewhere", we're off. Sigh, wiki awaaaay... of course! We have to talk to someone in a cargo storage room stuffed in the middle of San d'Oria's port! The reason I'm blogging all this stuff in a narrative fashion is to stop me from say, going to San d'Oria, getting a heap of quests, running around trying to fulfill them all at the same time, etc.

Although sooner or later I am gonna stop blogging and just DO THAT and vanish for like a month, y'guys. I'm just saying.

Anyway we go out to find that mirror in San d'Oria, and it turns out that the mirror... is CURSED. (That's bad.) It has the power to make people lose themelves to rage! Also it was stolen by orcs. Rather than just let them have the damn thing, we of course mount a recovery mission.

A dragon from the mirror appears and kills an orc as Xenosa arrives, and she's forced into one-on-one combat with the beast. It's the same kind of dragon it took me and three trust NPCs to kill last time, so I'm a little nervous... Until Nanako enters via RIDER KICK and something goes SNAP.

"The mirror was feeding the dragon energy!" she calls, and with her at my side the fight goes a LOT smoother.

Back in town, Luto's let down that the mirror is broken... but she understands it was to save Xenosa's life. Besides, it's a thrill just to know the treasure existed! She'll put it in storage -- but the Glass of All-Seeing lights up as Nanako turns to leave, and starts showing Xenosa's face. Could it be the reason Nanako was led here... was to meet a new partner?

(Start your slash fiction engines ... now.)

We now have Nanako as an Adventuring Fellow, and can build links of trust with her, help her level up, and generally be Dragon-Slaying Besties Forevah. We'll need her at peak performance too, to conquer the next stage of the storyline... don't miss it, Adventuring Fellows!

CHOCO-WATCH CORNER!

I've decided to raise that chocobo egg! Right now, to build love and affection, I've taken to staring at the egg and trying to imbue it with love and affection.

This takes a LOT OF STARING.

A LOT OF FUCKING STARING. AHAHAHA I WILL BE THE BEST CHOCOBO MOM. AAAAHAHAHA. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

See you next time!

So, Nanako is more like a sidekick than just someone of a static level who you get as an ally?

Sounds like Square was at least trying to make it a game that someone could solo, instead of having to find a linkshell to progress on. That would be a great MMO to have.

Can the thing inside the opaque white chocobo egg even tell that you are staring at it? (And then if it does, IS IT GOING TO BE FLATTERED OR CREEPED OUT, I CAN'T TELL)

(I mean yes I can, because obvs, game rules. But seriously.)
