Dark Souls 2 COMPLETE
May. 5th, 2014 04:54 pmToday, after about sixty hours of play, I finished up Dark Souls 2. It was pretty good! I think going in blind and mostly staying blind was the right choice, although as I got towards the endgame I increasingly needed to look at guides to verify "yes, it's supposed to be like this". I think in general DS2 has great systems (I would love a remake of the first two Souls games in this engine), good solid boss fights, and really... tepid level design.
The levels all felt very straightforward and un-secretive and it didn't feel as interconnected as the first game. For that matter, the places that DID connect together didn't always feel like they connected in a way that made logical sense. While in Dark Souls I could always think back and mentally draw a map of how I got where I was, when I tried that with DS2 I just wound up with a big shrug.
The NPCs were largely unmemorable as well, which bothered me a little. It was very much a B-Team game, but that doesn't mean I didn't like it a lot. It just didn't have the lustre of the previous games, and that's okay. Perhaps the next one will be even better! I understand that New Game + has opened up, and that the Real Dark Souls 2 Starts Here, but I am le tired and feel like doin' something else.
I'm currently trying to decide if I'm up for more Metal Saga or if I want to wave my hands some and just move along to something else, particularly since both Dynasty Warriors 8 Complete (PC edition) and Drakengard 3 (PS3) will be showing up on the 13th and 20th respectively. Genuinely unsure if I'll pick up Metal Saga or just grab something short off the stack, but ... I feel good about finishing this one off. Brag post yay.
