Metal Saga is one of my favorite games, from the little I've dabbled in it. It's... also a game that's largely pointless. There IS a main plot, sure... but for the most part that's not what the game is about. The game starts long after the Earth has been near-destroyed by a giant supercomputer. The old "We built it to protect the planet and it decided the best way was to destroy all humans" routine, y'know the one.
Large portions of humanity died out, and the rest banded together to survive. Some of them became Hunters: Hunters of scrap, hunters of robots, hunters of bounties. Those brave Hunters eventually shut down the killer computer. Of course, AI still runs rampant. There are towns, but just as much there are outlaws, robots, and other such things roaming the wilderness. There's still a place in the world for Hunters, brave wanderers who salvage the scraps of what's left. Which is where you come in. Or rather, we do.

Or rather, this guy does. Auer. A bold, snappily dressed (rockin' the tie, very sharp) young man who is about to make the biggest choice of his life.
"You want to become a Hunter?" his mother asks, baffled. "What's this all of a sudden? Well. I think it's a bad idea. It's a terrible, needless job. It's dangerous, you don't have a steady income... Most people don't have a very high opinion of Hunters... If I had my way, your father wouldn't be a Hunter either."

"Now, there's still plenty of time for you to train as a mechanic to inherit the family business. I think you'd be really good at it. And not just because you're my son! So? How about it? Will you try out something more stable than becoming a Hunter?"
Y'know... What Nina (the hero's mother) says makes a lot of sense. Day after day of hiking through the wastelands, fighting killer robots and God knows what kind of mutant beasts, getting shot at, living hand to mouth, cooking over a hot engine... Why WOULD anyone willingly choose that life?

It's just not for us.
A few years later, we're one of the best mechanics around. Working to service other people's tanks, all dressed in spiffy green coveralls... sure, our father has a few regrets. He's a little sad, because he always thought we'd follow in his footsteps. Yet... it's nice, working on dependable machines for a living. We always know where we stand with a good engine tuning.
** ACTUAL GAME TEXT **
"And so, Auer inherited the family business, spending his life as a mechanic. He would never fight a giant flying manta ray... Nor would he find a pet dog with heavy artillery on its back. No, he wouldn't even encounter a cult of body-builders obsessed with ab tone and proper waxing techniques. Truly, Auer lived one of the most boring lives ever imagined.
Sure, he eventually gets married and has a few kids, who go on to lead equally dull and boring lives, and of course he dies quietly in bed. But every man dies, not every man truly awakens an attractive female robotic weapon designed long ago by scientists that time forgot. Auer didn't, anyway. That's for sure."

The credits roll.

And we get the stats of our impressive 0% clear file.
Well! ... I really didn't think we'd manage it, but we successfully beat Metal Saga. There was a moment in the middle there, where it popped up that choice box... I really thought I'd just kinda burn out and give up. Still... great effort prevailed. Thank you all for all your support over this playthrough. I couldn't have made it without you.
We'll do another draw next time. See you then!
