Gabriel Knight SOTF - Finale.
Feb. 11th, 2014 03:30 amLast time, Gabriel and his girded loins had just walked into a doomy room of doomy doomity room-doom. Or... something. Look, we're about done with the game, I am so out of material.
Here, play this music in the background. Also generally speaking: Ways to die -- Mess up any step of this.
If you remember the plan, Gabriel was to make sure Tetelo didn't make an appearance, while Mosely covered Doctor John and Grace waited, pretending to be unconscious until the right moment to unleash kung-fu action.
It's a pretty good plan, right up until the point where Tetelo's the one driving Malia around from the moment she walks in the room.

So the plan is already shot to hell and neither Gabe nor Mosely quite know what to do about it. Doctor John drapes Grace over the altar, sacrifices a few chickens along with Tetelo, and they prepare to give Grace the knife. Gabriel does the only thing he can think to do:

He yanks off his costume, thrusts the talisman at the two and demands they cut it out right now.
Gabriel: "TETELO, STOP! I won't let you kill her!"
Tetelo: "WHAAAAT?!? You BASTARD of a BASTARD! You can't stop ME! Watch your friend... DIE!"
It isn't the smoothest plan I've ever seen, but hey. it makes them hesitate long enough...

...for Grace to get the hell out of Dodge with a tactical roll onto the floor. Tetelo's knife goes THUNK and nearly breaks on the table, and Tetelo yanks her mask off to scream at Gabe some more. Doctor John moves in to deck Grace -- but that's laying hands on a civilian. Mosely instantly opens fire.

As it happens, that slap from Doctor John knocked Grace across the room, next to the door. Mosely helps her up, makes sure she's okay (she rolled with it, she's fine) and stands ready for the next move. Meanwhile, John's body leaks blood all over the table and flops off onto the floor. The table slides open, revealing ... the Gedde Idol. This is where they've been focusing power for the last X-hundred years.

Unfortunately, as Mosely whips his gun out to open fire on Tetelo, she notices and makes it explode. Okay, so much for that. Tetelo then stomps across the floor to put herself between Gabe and his friends. As she lays out, he has two choices:
1: Give her the talisman.
2: Watch his friends die.
...I hate to say it, but Grace-sans-glasses and Mosely-sans-pistol are more likely to get themselves killed than be a useful resource right now. Y'remember waaaay back on Day 2, at the police station? The little throwaway line about Gabe and Mosely being champs at playing Monkey-in-the-Middle in their distant past?

Gabriel and Mosely remember.
Gabriel: "Get Grace out of here! The talisman will protect you!"
Grace: "What abo--"
Gabriel: "GO!"
Tetelo: "You are UNARMED now, WITCH-HUNTER!"
Which is true. And it means Gabe is weak to her mystical influence. She waves her hands around.
Tetelo: "APPROACH ME! And KNEEL!"

Once Gabriel is in the worship position, Tetelo hauls him over and pins him down, prepared to cut his throat. Gabriel has time to do exactly one thing.
So he breaks their idol.

And an earthquake starts. Big one too. This far underground, we seem to be close to some veins of magma...

And naturally Tetelo/Malia end up dangling over one. Here we are: The big moment. The defining moment. Who is Gabriel Knight, at heart?
ENDING A: Gabriel has learned absolutely nothing. His quest to purify his soul has come to nothing, his selfish nature takes over, or maybe he's just bound tight to destiny. You can get this ending by either doing absolutely nothing while Malia screams for help, or by (why the FUCK would you do this) clicking the schattenjager dagger on her and deliberately trying to kill her.
Here is Ending A on Youtube.
Gabriel betrays Malia completely, through inaction or violence. In her last moments, Tetelo condemns him to follow, lashing out with a whip and dragging him to a fiery death with her. Outside, Grace and Mosely are forced to face the fact that Gabriel's not coming out.
"A world without Schattenjagers... It's sad." Grace muses.
"We'll just have to do the best we can." Mosely sighs.
"Goodbye, Gabriel Knight."
...It's worth noting that the game treats this as a perfectly valid ending. You get the credits and your final score. Should you dislike Gabe that much, if you decide that he can't change his base nature, if you feel that destiny is engraved in stone... If this is what you choose to believe happened, feel free to ignore the sequels.
Me?
Fuck that ending.
If there's one sin Gabriel's not guilty of, it's standing by and watching while others suffer. He just threw away his only magical protection to help his best friends escape. He started this whole thing by trying to solve a murder case for his -book-. He has been helpful to everyone who has asked it of him so far, and I just can't believe Gabriel, even as much of a douche as he can be in his poorest moments, would stand by and let someone die through inaction or outright malice.
Sure, he'd spend their money once they were dead, but he would fight to keep them alive as long as he could before it came to that.
ENDING B:

That's the Gabe Knight -I- know.
Tetelo: "NO! You WILL betray her, Witch-Hunter!"
Gabriel: "I WON'T LET YOU KILL HER!"
Tetelo starts in on Gabe's arm with her ritual knife, cutting deep, slice after slice as blood runs down his arms, until ...
(From the novel: Tetelo, baffled and sad: "...why won't you let go?")
Malia: "G-Gabriel? You didn't betray me!"

Gabriel: "I've got you!"
Malia: "No. It has to end with me."
Gabriel: "No! Don't you let go, god damn it, don't you DARE..."
Malia: "Goodbye, my love."

...

(Or watch on Youtube.)
Grace: "I think it's over now."
Gabriel: "Yes."
Grace: "I'm sorry about Malia. I know you cared for her. ... You've... changed, you know?"
Gabriel: "Have I?"
Grace: "...yeah. So... are you going to do it? Be Schattenjager?"
Gabriel: "I'm going to TRY. Don't worry about it though. You'll be back at school, safe and sound."
Grace: "...I don't have to go back."
Gabriel: "Grace! Give UP your Ph.D?"
Grace: "There are THINGS in this world, Gabriel -- A spiritual path can be more important than a path of the mind."
Gabriel: "Spiritual path, huh. Well... You're welcome to stay, Gracie, s'long as you don't expect me to know what I'm doin'."
Grace: "This is a historical moment, isn't it? Three HUNDRED years ago, the Ritter talisman was stolen by Tetelo. She used it to draw her family to power, while your family withered. She helped provoke the slave revolt in Haiti, she's... PROBABLY the reason for a LOT of the flavor and history of New Orleans -- both good and bad! Now she's gone. And your family is restarting. It almost makes you wonder, doesn't it? If it was supposed to happen this way? Good, coming from evil?"
Long, long silence.
Gabriel: "You think too much."
Grace: "Okay but REALLY, I think the most tragic thing? Was all those generations of young women, like Malia, trapped by this... large, overriding personality. FORCED into a life of HORROR."
Gabriel: "Kinda reminds me of livin' with you, Grace."
Long, long silence: Part 2.
Grace: "...y'know when I said you'd changed?"
Gabriel: "Mmh?"
Grace: "I was wrong."
Gabriel: "Are you sorry?"
Grace: "...nah."

THE END.
I do love this game. I'm glad I had the chance to show it off to you all. It's not even my favorite game from the series, but the FMV nature of Beast Within (GK2) makes it REALLY hard to show off. Doesn't mean I won't try.
As to what's next... I'm not sure yet. Maybe a random draw. Maybe not. I've been in kind of a Final Fantasy mood... kinda thinking of playing one of those.
(Any requests from the audience? I'm willing to do 6, 7, 8, and particularly 9, interested in doing 13 someday but I dunno about right now... the rest, I'd need a real good pitch for.)

Date: 2014-02-11 03:22 pm (UTC)I've never seen a decent LP of 8 (haven't completed it myself, either), so that would be interesting. Likewise with 13, but from what I know, it looks awful in a particularly boring way.

Date: 2014-02-16 07:30 am (UTC)The only game I've ever played that surprised me that way was Fear Effect 2, where the main character (a merc named Hana) ends up literally going to (Chinese) Hell to rescue her girlfriend, Rain.
Rain was not in Fear Effect 1. Fear Effect 2 is a prequel.
I was pretty much resolved to "Rain dies in a tragic way", but no. Hana rescues her girlfriend from Hell, everything's cool, and Rain just decides the next mission doesn't call for her skillset and stays home. Made me kinda happy.

Date: 2016-02-15 03:01 am (UTC)Anyway wow, you said there would be a hitch but I'm honestly amazed just, like, on a scale of 1 to 10, just how badly that plan went wrong. But it worked out? Mostly?
Also I was really expecting Gabe to have to let go of the money as part of the whole Schattenjager thing, but he actually got out with a trenchcoat stuffed with bills. Well... like you said, the castle does need repairs, I guess.
Anyway, hooray, thank you for doing this writeup! This was a neat game and you did a good job handling it.

Date: 2016-02-15 03:30 am (UTC)Accordingly, taking a giant-ass load of money with you is, uh... allowed! Because... it helps fight the darkness! But just stealing from random people not so much allowed. I have no doubt that Mosely won't speak to Gabe for a LONG time after the credit card bill arrives... or maybe that's where some of that dosh goes.
