The weirdest thing about Crash Time 3 is that I believe it thinks itself to be a comedy.
It's based on a German TV show, "Alarm For Cobra 11". From what I can tell the show is pretty straightforward and seriously-played. The game, meanwhile, has advertisements for burgers that "now contain at least 0.5% flesh", an airline called "LOL ROFA" and the unlockable ability to drive the world's saddest police vehicle.
It wasn't until I hit this bit, though, that it connected for me:
Ben: "Semir, one of the tank teams we've been assigned to escort has gone missing. The Chief thinks it'd be a better idea if we took their place. You can drive a tank, can't you?"
Semir: "Of course! And it's really getting old. This is the third game in the series, and the third time those Synetic guys have made me drive a tank. They need to come up with some better ideas or I'm walking out."
Cue the sudden, wide-eyed realization: "Oh. Wait. This game thinks it's funny."
It was hard to tell because the rest of the plot was so DISJOINTED. Semir and Ben, two cops who only have breakfast on their mind (the entire first half of the game is riddled with references to getting breakfast, not having breakfast, the case keeping them from having breakfast, getting a breakfast on the road, being late to training because of breakfast) discover a "radical left-wing terrorist plot" to bomb a hotel. Meanwhile, they also sign up undercover at a racing club, and at the circus. Also, they steal like ten cars and give them to a smuggler because... he'll keep stealing cars and they can catch him at it.
Then they blow up a police car because it had explosives in it. Except to blow it up they use a remote controlled car with a bomb tied to it.
Semir and Ben are not the best cops in the world.
I dunno, I had... I didn't FAIL to have fun playing this game, but it wasn't the AWESOME FUN TIME that "Crash Time" implies. It was servicable. This game happened.
Somehow they're up to Crash Time 5 in Germany. After 4 they stopped exporting them here. I think I'm a little glad.
I am re-routing from the Hat for a bit to play through Uncharted 2. After that it's back to the random draw.
See you next time.
