Dear Aquaria,

How are you doing? I put you on my Steam list of games to play years ago, and then we never got in touch. Over the years I come to realize I may have misrepresented you, and I wanted to apologize now that we're actually getting to know each other.

I've been describing you as "sort of like Ecco the Dolphin". As it turns out, that's not far off! It's just that when I said that, I was always imagining the first few stages of Ecco. The stages where you sort of romp about under the ocean, talking to fish and stuff. Doing lighthearted things. Now that I've spent a few hours with you, I can see you're more the really creepy later parts of Ecco.

For example, as I was playing today, I -was- in fact singing musical beauty at sea life and exploring lost undersea ruins with a sense of wonder and fascination. However, you were more interested in having me spew energy bullets at danmaku-barfing octopii. Naija, the heroine, even got a nice little monologue about how her newfound powers of dark energy were both a delight and a curse. That was fine. I also liked the part where I got to turn into an adorable fish and explore hidden passages. A fine Metroid-y touch. I'm looking forward to exploring the cooking system more, too.

However, the enormous cathedral with an interior decoration that said "Silent Hill joins the Body of the Many", all red tendons and exposed internal organs of a rotting mutated culture from generations long past... That made me stop for a few moments. And when I had to fight the multi-eyeballed chthuloid monstrosity that shot lasers from every orifice and gave birth to smaller, faster-moving versions of itself as I was fighting it, I decided that maybe I needed to take a break for a little while.

What I'm saying, Aquaria, is I'm sorry for spending all this time thinking of you as a "Nice little peaceful underwater exploration game". Clearly you are ready to take the inflatable floatie water-wings off and start kicking me in the face here, and I need to adjust to that. It's lucky for you I'm a gaming masochist or this relationship might be in trouble. As it is, I'm delighted to see what's behind your mask.

Same again tomorrow?

Luv, Sqrl.

Eep!

I think I have Aquaria, too, unless I'm just thinking of something similarly titled. (I try to buy fewer games, as I generally forget all about them once bought..)

My reaction as well. "Oh this is so beautiful and fun, I am one with the sea-ah-ah-AHHH OH GOD IT'S DARK AND THINGS ARE CHASING ME WHY DO THEY HAVE SO MANY TEETH?!"

Also the cthulu thing. I am genuinely creeped out by deep dark water, this game made me want somebody to hold my hand through the latter bits. Nobody knows what LIVES down there!
