So I just finished watching a movie called "Rubber" on Netflix, and I was kind of intrigued by it in a lot of ways, but you shouldn't actually -watch- this movie I think. It has a weird murderous disrespect for its actors, its characters, and its audience. And I think all of those were the same people.

It's a movie about a car tire who kills people with its psychokinetic powers. Meanwhile, an audience watches through binoculars. The audience receives a speech at the start of the movie about how a lot of things in movies happen for absolutely no reason. This movie is a homage to that ideal.

...I sort of liked it. It was deeply metafictive. It was also rather cruel-spirited in places. It's certainly the best movie about a murderous psychokinetic car tire I suppose I'll ever see, but also the worst.

... So yeah! Rubber. It's on Netflix if you want to see it, but probably you shouldn't unless you're really into the idea of a movie about a movie -about- a movie about a killer tire. Just, y'know. Don't blame me.

It does seem to've garnered exactly that kind of respect, interestingly. That's difficult to pull off - all too often, a film made with the explicit intention of being oddball winds up being overly self-conscious, or simply not all that much fun, as with Galaxina; I'd expected I'd lap it up, but have never got around to finishing it.

Now, if we could only get a flick or two featuring some of the fun TFs one sees on SoFurry et al, such as latex or robotic.. ^_^

Galaxina is so terrible we actually TURNED IT OFF a quarter of the way through. And this is coming from a crowd that happily wolfed-down the entire Tetsuo trilogy in one night, to say nothing of Zardoz and more schlocky Italian sci-fi than you can name.

I was actually in a Best Buy today and they had Rubber on an endcap, on BluRay. It struck me as a very strange thing to feature so prominently.

Somehow I feel better about the world knowing that a movie such as the one described above exists in it.
