My father, when I called to check on him re: the hurricane - "We're here on the Island. We're... uh, we're good I guess. All we can do is face things gracefully. Hmm? 'We' is me and your aunt Wanda, your mother took a celphone and left... Not sure where she is exactly.."

My mother, shouting over a shitty celphone connection: "WHAT? YEAH, I GOTTA PLAN FOR THE HURRICANE. IT'S CALLED 'GET THE FUCK OUT'. I'M IN A CASINO. IN WEST VIRGINIA. I'M A COUPLE HUNDRED UP, I GOTTA GO."

There's a reason I lean towards mom's side of the family.

Buckling down on an island may not exactly be good though. Perhaps bucking down in a hotel on the eastern end of the state is a better idea? Or maybe one in Virgina, with a casino?

I responded to Hurricane Rita and my inability to leave town for it by moving to the other side of the country. I'm just about gawdarn done with those damned things.
