Ruminations on the Ending Path Not Taken -

The plans are in place, the candles are lit. There's a small horde of minions summoned and waiting for the signal, milling around in an aimless herd out there. You can see them from the balcony, they have no idea what's going on. The runes on the walls have even started to glow a sharp cherry-red color.

It's about half past the Apocalypse and it's time to face the facts. He isn't going to show up.

In all those rants, did you mention that he would rule at your side? Did you say it often enough? If he'd believed you, he might be here. Of course you had to try to kill him a few times, that's the only way he'd get stronger. Did he take it personally? Maybe you should have apologized.

Wait. There was that one ill-conceived comparison to Cain and Abel. Shit. That was supposed to illustrate your brotherly bond. Only famous brothers that came to mind at the time. Really bad idea there, though.

All your life, you've had these plans. You've gathered and scraped and thrown every last dollar into the fortress, you've chosen the outfit for visual impact. You even dyed your hair for this. Scalp still itches, it's distracting. The only thing out of your hands was his participation. Your eyes roam over the scrolls, the plots, the diagrams of government for your new rule with him. Worthless now. All this might as well go into the fire. But, well, it's still possible he might...

A cry from the minions outside catches your attention. You race to the balcony. Could it really be? Has he reflected on his foolish course of action and come to your side after all?

Not really. Although that enormous plume of flame in the distance certainly means something. ...Wait, that ritual across town... THAT'S what he was doing? He blew you off for THAT dime-store shit? Oh, and of course that's what was causing the end of life as we know it in the first place. Fantastic. Your plan would've harnessed their summoning energy and built on theirs ten times over if you'd started the machines on time. Nobody's going to see that now.

That glow... Angels? Those are angels rising from the trees over there! Aw, come on, this is a big load of crap is what it is.

As the sunlight cracks through the haze of smoke, and the black clouds overhead begin to disperse, you pull off the cape and give it a toss towards the coat rack. Little mister hero boy had things to do. Time to wash out the dye, dispel the minions before they get unruly, and try to reintegrate with society.

Maybe you'll give these "ruling the world" plans to your children. Hero-boy has to have descendants somewhere down the road.

I went to bed a few hours ago and woke up with a big chunk of this in my mind. When I tried to go back to sleep, it didn't work until I came out here and started typing. This probably isn't the best I could get it, but I would like some goddamn sleep now thank you.

The plot is loosely inspired by Shin Megami Tensei Devil Summoner, and to a lesser extent, by all those sub-bosses and villainous masterminds who vanish when the rails of the plot fail to pass their base as the player strives towards Ending 5.
