Misc. Cheese is what the bottom of the package calls it. The top refers to it as "Smoked Gouda", and tells me it came from Smith Farmsted in MA. Aged over 60 days, I am told. I smell the plastic wrap curiously, but it doesn't smell like much of anything. This is probably a good thing. Gouda does not seem to be a smell-based cheese. That I can tell.
So as I mentioned a few entries ago I've been wanting to try more varieties of cheese. This came back from the grocery store, and so far I have not dared to open it. However, since that was four hours ago, I feel I can do so now. Here goes.
Holy jesus this is thick plastic.
The moment I breech the plastic a rich, bacony smell comes to my nose. Must be the smoking process, I can't think of any good reason a cheese would smell like bacon otherwise. It's an appealing smell. I briefly consider hanging this near my monitor. Then I decide to buy a bacon air freshener from Stupid.com instead, and to EAT the cheese.
Which I'm about to try. Nibble, nibble.
The bacon impression doesn't last beyond bite one. It's a soft, kind of waxlike texture and HOLY CRAP THERE'S THE TASTE. The taste is... ...hard to describe. It bears absolutely no resemblence to any cheese I've had before. It does kind of remind me of a flavored candle, except that it's rather tasty once the initial sharp bite wears off my tongue. I nibble again, and again. Further from the tip the taste settles down a bit, becoming milder and less bitter. It's a good taste, when it's not trying to SEAR MY TONGUE OFF. I start to linger over bites.
Today's Experiment - Gouda - SUCCESS.
