Meme 1, Day 10: Favorite Retro Game -

I take issue with this one. How do you define retro? What do you mean when you talk about it? How far back should I go to be "authentically retro"? I know people who haven't experienced the golden age of SNES RPGs. Is that retro enough? I remember fights over Sierra's change from a text-parser interface to a mouse-click interface. Am I qualified to know what retro is? I once watched people talk on a forum about how out of date and primitive Playstation 2 games looked, and how someone ought to remake Doom and add a cover system and health regeneration. Is "retro" defined as a game too 'lol old' for them to play?

Dear reader, do you realize that the original Playstation is now a retro gaming system? It's fifteen years old. Does that affect your definition of retro? Does that make you feel sad, reader?

It makes me feel sad.

I...

*sigh*

My favorite retro game is Mega Man 2. I feel it really evolved in level design and added to the series without getting caught up in sequel stagnation or overly complex gimmicks and tricks. I don't hold with your newfangled 'slide' move either.

Next question. Please.

Meme 2, Day 10: Best gameplay -

OH LET'S NOT MAKE THIS HARD OR ANYTHING.

Okay, fine. You want to know what leaps to my mind when you say "Best Gameplay"? You really want to know?
Retro Game Challenge.

Released for the DS fairly recently, this is a game about playing other, older games. Two shooters, two driving games (the same driving game twice, actually), an RPG, three quirky Japanese platformers.

There is something for everyone in this game. The 'target' challenges that you have to beat to unlock the next game are easy enough that anyone can do them with some practice, but beating each game takes dedication and work and a love for mastering simple mechanics. This game knows what makes a basic game work and exploits it in the best ways possible.

Some of the games are a little meh (there was NO CALL to put Rally King in there twice) but they all WORK, they're all FUN, and you can keep playing them for ages. It's everything you want, it's everything you need, it's everything that lesser games wish that they could be. It does all the right things at exactly the right times, and nobody fucking bought it and I DON'T KNOW WHY.

(We own two copies and I bought a third for a friend.)

Accordingly, no US release of the sequel. The sequel with 14 games over the 8 in the original. The sequel that is significantly better and includes a variation on Pac-Man I don't think anyone's ever done before.

I'm goin' to bed.

and how someone ought to remake Doom and add a cover system and health regeneration

That's it. We need some kind of purge.

See, the Imperium has a word for the kind of purge we need.

They call it Exterminatus.

Retro means a brand new game that emulates the look and/or feel of a previous generation! Which I guess in your case would make it Retro Game Challenge? Okay that's just one more possible yet unspecified definition of Retro. And yeah it freaks me out that [livejournal.com profile] bossgoji has fond childhood memories of playing Final Fantasy 7. CHILDHOOD.

Not only am I old but my friends are kids and they're adults. o.o

Out of curiosity, why should that freak you out? Pretty much everything from Pong and BEYOND is available on download or flash somewhere, so its not as if the actual experiences are missing.

... ok... the dimly lit, smoke-filled arcade rooms in bowling alley bars is missing, I'll fully concede that... and those games sure gleamed a whole lot better back when we didn't have today to compare them to... but the simple truth is that people keep appearing at younger ages and they just weren't around when 8-bit was king.

Its ok... they don't know that shots do not hurt other players...

... yet...

Well it's mostly that it makes me feel old. Even though FF7 was the first Final Fantasy game that Bea played, I've grilled them and they've gone back and played lots of classic RPGs, even the Ultima games. They're still around to be experienced.

The thing that freaks me out is that it was the FIRST Final Fantasy game Bea had ever played, in her childhood. In my childhood, Final Fantasy wasn't even out yet, though when it was it became part of it. She's only something like eight years younger than me, but she's an adult. I'm almost thirty. ^.^;;

I hear you. One thing that makes me feel old is realizing that some of the new players on FurryMUCK (which is kind of surprising in the first place--people are *still* joining up for text-based games, instead of complaining it should have full graphics and such?) weren't even born when I started playing...

And...that Retro Gaming Challenge game sounds kinda fun, actually.
