Meme 1, Day 7: Game With the Most Surprising Plot Twist/Ending (No Spoilers) -
Assassin's Creed 2. Let's just say this is the first game I've ever played where someone starts talking to the fourth wall and they AREN'T talking to me-the-player.
Actually both the Assassin's Creed games could just rack up a slew of points in this. The second was particularly good about it though.
Meme 2, Day 7: Favorite Game Couple -
Fusionette and Faultline, City of Heroes.
Let me lay this out for you: He's a young man coming to terms with what his past means. She's a mutant with an organic nuclear reactor for a heart and a tendency to rush into battle headlong. Together, they fight crime.
Fusionette and Faultline one of the few pairs of NPCs that appear constantly throughout City of Heroes. You bump into them first in the -zone- called Faultline, an earthquake-destroyed section of the city you'll hit around level 15-16. The hero Faultline, called "Jim" around them, is just an angry young man who wants you to help his friend who's in over her head. As you work through the mission arc, you learn more about them, they grow closer together, and finally it wraps up in a huge time-travel plotline that wraps up all the unanswered questions and leads Jim to take up the mantle of a hero.
... And that could well be it, actually. Until much, much later in the game. Around level 45, you'll be called to go to the Rikti War Zone, to help defend the city against aliens. One of your first assignments? Well, some operatives haven't reported in, go check it out. So you hike out there and...
Hey! It's Fusionette and Faultline, KICKING MASSIVE ASS. Yeah, they got together, and damn their powers synergize well. They joined up with the Anti Rikti Task Force to use their powers to help protect the world, and they're with you all the way to the end of the massive Rikti War Zone story arc, tossing cute one-liners around the whole way.
In retrospect, this is not a particularly romantic couple. There's a fair bit of dialogue, but no touching, tender moments. What I like most about it is that... well, for one it's incredibly comic-book. And for two, in MMOs there's so much "storm through, kick ass, leave". It's nice when NPCs show up again, having had some character development when you weren't looking. When the woof and I saw them again after that long, we actually cheered, and damned if keeping them alive wasn't a priority for me when I was slinging healing around. It felt good to see that love could bloom even between two mutants on an alien space craft, y'know?
(...speaking of "love blooming", my #2 couple? Snake and Otacon, Metal Gear Solid.)
