Meme 1, Day 3: A Game That Makes You Really Happy -

I haven't been really happy in a long time. That said, there's a few things that always cheer me up. One of those things is superheroes. Not grim gritty mook-murdering superheroes, either. I mean Silver Age, brightly colored, awesome superheroes.

That's why the games that come to mind when I think of what makes me happy are the Freedom Force games.

Booming voices, heroic antics, bright colors. The ability to knock out a thug by throwing a car so hard it bowls him over and knocks down the building behind him. Mind-controlling minions to find out where the big boss is, and dealing with his EVIL PLOT. Velociraptors running through the streets, sidekicks that have a weaker version of the main hero's power set. Going back and forth in time, fighting GIANT versions of the bad guys... sigh. And a story! And pathos! And humor!

This is the kind of stuff that fills me with smiles. Hell, back when I wrote for WorthPlaying, I gave the second game the highest score I'd ever given a game. It was the one and only time I abused my power for personal gain. I would not stand to see that game called anything but the best superhero game on the market at the time, because... well, it was.

Damn, now I wanna play those over again.

Meme 2, Day 3: A Game That Is Underrated -

Oh, are we back to THIS again? Sigh.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts.

Rare knew the fans were gonna hate it. It's sprinkled through the game, lines of dialogue like "Use floaters or your cart will sink, like this game at retail." They took a pair of games about elaborate platforming and made a build-your-own-vehicle cart driving puzzle-solving game out of it.

And you know what? It WORKED. With a lick of creative thinking this became the best damn game on the market for people who want to build things... which, sadly, are not the same people as the ones who want to do platforming. Usually.

(Yes, I know you personally like both. Shush.)

Can you not beat anyone in a straight-up race? Install a flipper on the side of your cart and huck them into a lake. Do you have to carry items from a dispenser across a level into a basket? Rip the dispenser off the wall and take it with you to squirt product straight into the bin. Want to do a ski-jump but bored with skis? Why not build some kind of obscene perpetual motion device that hurls you violently into endless loops. PHYSICS IS YOUR BITCH. If you can think of it, by god, you can drive it. Just get creative.

No one bought it, of course. It requires work to enjoy and was not identical to previous offerings in the series.

There's a reason I rarely talk about games here, anymore.

I'm so bitter.

In regards to zany superhero antics, have you watched that new Super Hero Squad Show yet? It's surprisingly funny. I caught the second half of an ep where Ms. Marvel and MODOK were dating. And a full ep where they were having a sleepover with Dr. Strange at the Sanctum Sanctorum. The bathroom scene with the Hulk was just nuts. XD

I like the new Avengers cartoon, also, but I don't think it's your style. Have you seen it?

They seem to be going in a more realisticish direction, but not as gritty as you sometimes get. It reminds me a lot of the Lions Gate animated marvel films that have been popping up over the last few years. I enjoy those. <3

I suppose we'll have to wait and see what direction the Avengers go.

I've been meaning to play Freedom Force myself lately. I have both of those games on Steam, though I haven't installed them. Lately I've been playing X-COM and AI:War and not finishing The Witcher, though. ^.^;;
