So, I went and saw this! 11 PM showing. Just got back.

I quite liked it! The visual effects and video game gimmicks are basically how I see the world all the time anyway, but it was nice to be able to murmur to the wolf that something was about to ding up on screen just before it did. So... yeah.

I can see many reasons NOT to like it, not the least of which is Scott himself for 9/10s of the movie.
Luckily, I didn't have to try to relate to him, because there was this handy constant reminder that I was seeing a movie. (The fourth wall. They keep doodling and leaning on it helpfully, to remind me it was there.)

It also kept accidentally tripping my Uncanny Valley filters, with weird moments of queasy alarm. More on that under the cut.

Still, all in all, I really liked this a lot.

So I'm actually a little sad. In my new ENDING D canon, Scott stays with Knives, the age thing stops being weird after a couple of years, and at some point in the future they get married and form a Chinese/Canadian ninja team that does odd jobs around the world.

But the ending they went with was okay too I guess. Nega-Scott's still single. Hmm.

(Also, seriously, Scott. You dumped a girl named Knives and then stepped on her for the entire movie. You are the dumbest motherfucker in the world and only your genre saved you from decapitation.)

As for the queasy alarm... the idea of things like "People could burst into coins ANY SECOND." or the brief horror of people getting roasted or blown up at a rock concert of all things. Just little details that make me feel "Ew. I -am- glad I don't live in magic-realism fiction." and then remembering the awful stuff that COULD happen to me in reality, etc. Twitch. Ah well.

Oh. And my favorite character? A tie between Wallace the Magical Gay Roommate and Julie, the foul-mouthed shopkeeper who works every job in town.)

Re: Breaking up with Knives: Someone calls him out on this in the comic!

Scott's kinda an idiot and kinda a douchebag, but the point of it is supposed to be watching him pull his head out of his ass.

Wallace, on the other hand, is just plain awesome.

I agree that the unsympathetic qualities of Scott were the biggest detraction.

See, I really like the idea that random wandering monsters could show up at any time, and get turned into coins or power-ups when defeated... it would sure beat the the heck out of my real job!
