Prince of Persia 2008: I really -wanted- to like this. And it pissed me off so very hard at first, by subverting my expectations. And then I liked it again once I adjusted to the ways it was NOT the game I wanted to play.

So.. all right. After beating my first major boss and getting 3/4 of the travel powers... this is a $10 purchase. I will buy this game for $10, delete my saved game, and start over. Just not right -now-, you see.

My pet name for this game (in IM status messages) has been Mighty Mouthy Princely Ranger: Light Seed Rescue, because that is what you do. You run around, you push the "make snarky comment" button, you leap off cliffs trying to get Light Seeds (collectible power-unlock tokens) and then you die because you hurled yourself off a cliff you ninny. Except you don't die. Elika saves you. I guess you play the Muscle in this relationship, because she does fine in the platforming stuff herself. (Yes, spoiler people. I know why she isn't doing it alone. Shhhh.)

The interactions between Elika and the Prince are fantastic, except that I am afraid that one day I'll meet Nolan North (Drake from Uncharted, Desmond from Assassin's Creed, The Prince in this) and I'll say something like "I am a very big fan of your work! It's so well-written and funny!" and he'll start to say "Well, thank--" and then by pure reflex I'll have stabbed him in the throat. Because I am growing very sick of his voice after two games in a row with him talking it up, you see.

I will note that, building on that Assassin's Creed connection, putting the Prince in the unlockable Altair's Robes made this game about three hundred percent more awesome for me, because I could pretend it was Desmond fucking about in the Animus after-hours. "No, Desmond, I do NOT believe that your ancestors could fly, run up walls, dueled giant rock monsters, OR hung out with a princess whose clothing tore away a little more each time she used her magic world-healing powers. What the HELL have you done to our software?"

So on the whole... yes, this is a ten buck purchase that I will make in the future, but right now I am REALLY sick of it and ready to return it and pick something else up. Gamefly suggests that returning it right now might net me either a copy of Battle Fantasia or Bullet Witch, and either sounds like a good time to me right now.

So for your next game, we should hunt you up something starring Cam Clarke instead, right? ;-)
