The newspost, Gabe's newspost in specific, on today's Penny Arcade reminds me why I enjoy that comic in the first place. ... Actually, I guess I lie. I don't really enjoy the comic as much as the news posts, which are alternately thought-provoking (Tycho's) and usually kinda AWESOME. (Gabe's).

Today's just makes me weirdly happy that... somewhere out there, people are taking stuff and at once taking it seriously and NOT seriously. At the same time. This is all I've ever wanted out of life.

Weirdly enough, I'm including a "crowd support" mechanic for a D&D convention game I'm hoping to run soon.

Though mine involves schmoozing at the pre-fight party to make friends and allies.

If it's 3e, just consider crowd support to be a kind of bardic music, perhaps?

It's 4e and it's more of a "Brawl with a host at the party".

The "Crowd support" comes in the form of audience interference by throwing stuff/casting spells.

An audience that grants tactical rather than moral support!

Could still be opportunities to cook up some terrain powers (DMG2 p.62) that grant morale bonuses or healing surges from having an engaged audience.

It does feature a musical stage with built in public address which will lengthen the range of sound-based attacks.

Yeah, not to mention Tycho waxing poetic about the utterly hilarious bullshit people are pulling in Modern Warfare 2 in the name of a "competitive edge". I was rolling over laughing at the "pinata" analogy.
