So lately I've been playing a lot of SD Gundam G Generation World, which is a game about taking a group of pilots and putting them in low-quality giant robots and grinding and grinding and grinding and upgrading their giant robots into Gundams and grinding and grinding and grinding and upgrading their skills and stats and robots and grinding and then presumably at some point you win, although the RACE FOR GIANT ROBOT SUPERIORITY will never end until maybe when you get to the Turn A Gundam "Moonlight Butterfly" edition. (Don't ask.)

Anyway, one of the best stages for the grindings on is stage A10, which is a Gundam Wing stage where you storm through six thousand Leos and five shuttles. (And then because this is a crossover game a bunch of Gundam 00 enemies show up and then a girl imitating a pop singer riding a bright pink Zaku shows up and everyone goes WHAT WHAT WHAT at it.)

But ANYWAY. Gundam Wing stage! This reminds me of something. What could that thing be? Oh yes.

Did you realize, readership, that today is the 11th anniversary of the day Gundam Wing started airing on Toonami?

I want to stop and talk about that for a second. When Gundam Wing started airing, I'd never really seen anything like it on television. Sure, I'd seen some anime before. Dominion Tank Police. Project A-Ko. Lodoss War. I'd seen Robotech and Voltron, so I knew anime had giant robots in it. But... Gundam Wing was interesting to me because it was on the Cartoon Network and yet it wasn't like "a cartoon" the way I thought of them at the time.

Non-comedic, kind of violent (even with their "destroyed" instead of "killed" and "I see his parachute", I could tell Duo was killin' dudes up in there), and actually almost philosophical. Sure, it was presenting its point through a thick haze of editing (they tried SO HARD for some reason to hide the fact that it was a Japanese show) and sure it was a little bit dumb and irritating if you came at it from, say, the Mechwarrior fan POV ("Don't these fucking robots ever take a hit?!"), but it was NEW. Different. Kind of cool.

I still salute and respect that. But that doesn't mean I'm not gonna make fun of it. Just know that I mock it with a certain amount of reverence, particularly today.

I bring you, my dwindling readership -
