I would like, if I may...
Oct. 18th, 2009 07:39 pm...to invite you on a strange and vulpine journey.
A friend of mine recently went to Korea, and ripped a DVD they found there. It has English subtitles, but they are a little dicky in places. This does not matter. I would like to invite you to download, via Bittorrent:
Yobi, the Five Tailed Fox.
Why should you watch this piece of Korean animation? (Anime?)
Yobi is part of a race of magical foxes that live in the mountains. She lives alone. One day, space aliens crash land on her doorstep. These space aliens wear metal underpants and eat nails. Yobi is entering puberty, so she's getting snarky and cranky and is starting to look for other things to do.
Meanwhile, at a nearby school for developmentally-weird children, Korean Steve From Blue's Clues is raising a class of awkward misfits.
These two plot threads crash into each other.
MEANWHILE, a grizzled old hunter is seeking the nine-tailed fox that ate his brother's soul.
ALSO MEANWHILE, the afterlife opens up in a giant forest pool. When you die you turn into a bird and hang out in the celestial pet shop, raised by a conglomeration of spirit rabbits until you are reincarnated.
FURTHERMORE, there is a confused bear who is very cute.
NONE OF THIS EVER REALLY GETS TIED UP. I'm telling you that now. This is a movie where NOTHING EVER MAKES SENSE. The pacing is WRONG. The ending does not make SENSE. (EDIT: Okay, re-thinking it the ending kinda makes sense, but leaves a LOT to be questioned.) I haven't even MENTIONED the really WTF-y elements of the plot.
Why am I recommending it? I like stories. And this is one that will BREAK YOUR DAMN BRAIN. It's also kind of cute, even if slightly depressing and UTTERLY BAFFLING at the end.
It's also pretty if you care about that. But mostly, it is COMPLETELY NONSENSICAL. I approve of that, and so I present it to you. Go grab the torrent. Thank you.
(Okay, it's probably not that surreal if you're used to weird kids animation, but there's enough of a cultural gap that it plays out like a weird Ghibli-inspired fever dream. That's a selling point, right?)

Date: 2009-10-19 01:46 am (UTC)...eh, what the hell, go for it. A couple weeks on TVTropes and Kumiho will be right there next to examples from Buffy, Negima, and Avatar.
I don't think there WERE kitsune in Avatar, but there will be an example from it. Mark my words.
