Do you have any idea how hard it is, thanks to lots and lots of cartoons, books, etc using it as basically the ultimate punchline...

Do you folks know how HARD it is to order an anchovy pizza on PURPOSE?

...okay, not that hard, because you cannot throw a rock in Acton without bouncing it off two or three greek pizza places, but it's still a bit difficult.

*nom pizza* And now my inexplicable cravings for super-heavily-salt-slathered fish are satiated for the next twenty or so years. That's better.

(Oh. And we'll be watching Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged, Patlabor, and Being Human. Thank you folks for your inputs!)

*cries and throws arms around you*

I... I thought I was the only one!

I was PISSED when I tried anchovies for the first time, because I felt like everyone -- TV, movies, my family, my friends -- had been lying to me for 30 years. I'm not to the point where I'd put them on my breakfast cereal or anything, but I'd gladly throw them on any pizza and I like to keep a few tins around as a quick pasta condiment. (I highly recommend orecchiette pasta + sauteed greens + mashed anchovies + almonds + fresh red chiles.)

Late at night, they sing to me, their sweet briny voices vibrant inside the tin... @.@

I was introduced to this combination by a really good little pizza joint in Milson's Point, just to the north of Sydney, a few years back - they called it "Capricciosa". Pepperoni, anchovies, capers. The spicy meatiness, the salty fishiness, and the sour tang all work together very well. No other pepperoni pizza is as good now. ^_^

(Though, Papa John's "Don Pepperoni" is pretty good - Nduja sauce, thick slices of pepperoni, and a classic Italian cheese blend. Quite heavy, but tasty)

And if you can find them, try smoked anchovies. =:9

Kind of amusing...the first time I read that, I ended up seeing it as 'geek pizza places'...then again, there's not that much of a difference between the two. ;-) (Well, unless it's the original carny version of 'geeks', which would mean headless bats and chickens would be toppings..)

Sadly, the only Greek-style pizza place around here that I know of closed down a while back. All that's left is a 'New York Pizza' claiming place, and the mass-market chains.

At one point, I had a Pizza Hut outright refuse to deliver a pie to me--they insisted that no one would order anything with anchovy, let alone red onion, anchovy, and bacon, so the order must be a joke and I could pound sand.

Irritates me that they've since removed Anchovies from the online menu since not all restaurants have them.
