So I'm having my first Issue with Windows 7. It had to happen eventually, eh? Occasionally I'll be playing a game and the sound will just... die. Go dead, silent. Windows recognizes whatever onboard sound I've got as simple "High Definition Audio Device". If I go off to Device Manager and tell it to uninstall, then reinstall the device, the sound will start back up again.

I assume this points to a driver problem.

Short of finding out what make of onboard sound I have and searching for specific Windows 7 drivers for it (unlikely), I don't know what to DO about it.

Anyone else have any suggestions? This isn't life threatening, just mildly irritating. I LIKE my explosion sound effects. I get SAD when they are taken away.

I think you've diagnosed the problem correctly. Try to find out what you have and see if there's a 7 driver - if not, try the Vista driver, sometimes that works as well.

If it's an onboard sound thingy, it might actually have a chance, I'd think - how many onboard sound chips are out there, really.

Elsewise, you'd have to wait for MS to update the generic driver...

Do you have any documentation for your computer that says what the motherboard is? If so, google that. You'll find the information about the onboard audio. Then you can go download the audio drivers from the motherboard mfr's website.
