I'm sorry, I'll start again.

For those of you into retrogaming, the complete works of ID Software are now HALF OFF for this weekend on Steam.

Do you know what that means?

That means that you can pick up the complete Commander Keen for $3.

THREE GODDAMN DOLLARS.

This is a game where you bounce on a pogo stick and steal teddy bears from googly-eyed Martians and floopy mouse people in pajamas. I want an icon of those floopy mouse people, I suddenly note. Anyway.

THREEEEEE DOLLARS. For Commander Goddamn Keen.

Yes, I bought the complete package which includes Doom and Quake and Quark and Qoom and Railgun Master 1999. You don't have to buy the Shoot People All Over Space And Time package if you don't want to. But I will be very disappointed in all of you if you do not embrace retro-Nineties shareware platformer awesome.

I heard that Xcom was just put on sale, was it made by id or was that just a coincidence?

And this is a short term sale? This weekend only?

And... will those games actually work on modern computers? Commander Keen was originally made to work with CGA on 386s wasn't it?

X-Com WAS just put on sale... by coincidence, I think. Steam appears to have gotten a bunch of neat stuff.

And yeah, this weekend only.

And they use DOSBox. EGA and (for the last few games) GLORIOUS 256 COLOR VGA.

Is the DOSbox directly integrated or do you have to install it seperately?

I've got it installed on my system for some reason I don't know, and strangely the file DOSbox.conf keeps popping up on my 'most used applications' section of the start menu and I can't imagine why.

Steam would have it integrated. They make it, for the most part, as painless as possible to get the stuff working, so you don't have to install extra apps to work with it.

And I wish they waited 2 more weeks for all this good stuff. Credit card is drained. :(

Well, sorta. ^.^;;

I mean, I know you need to be connected to steam to play Valve games, so that it can confirm you really own it, and junk...

Aah.

Then, yes, you either have to have Steam running and be connected to Steam's servers to play it (as with all Steam games) or set it to Offline mode and then you can play without connecting... but you still need Steam running.

Or you can copy the data files somewhere else and run some of the games with a source port, but that's not possible with Commander Keen and is outside the scope of the discussion anyway.
