I like tying up words.

In the mornings, when I am usually wide awake, I love to take a walk through the gardens and down by the lake, where I often see a duck and a drake, and I wonder as I walk by just what they'd say if they could speak, although I know that's an absurd thought.

(As the boyfriend says, "My English teacher would have shot me for constructing that sentence.")

The 'they' in the 'and' clause is referring to the duck and the drake in an auxilliary clause from the first part, which is a weird dependancy. I think that's what makes the sentence awkward to read.

Well, yeah. Instead of the 'and', so that it makes more sense to refer to the ducks and drakes with 'they'.
