Been trying to write a bit of short fiction lately. Can't seem to funnel ideas from my head to the screen. Getting irritated by this. How do more writerly people I know do it, again?
I start in the middle and then figure out how to get there, and how to get down off it. That's just generally how I write a story when I write one. I'm not known for my stories though.
I funnel notions and ideas to a list first (be it an outline or slips of paper in a hat). I find I have better luck getting words and other ideas to percolate when the original notions aren't banging around and vying for volume in my head at the same time.
I can't put word to sentence unless scenes have popped up wholesale in my head first. Having bits and pieces of what could effectively become a complete story works the best for me.
Then again I have dreams like ALF and Scott Baio helping me defend a shopping mall from invading Popples, so sometimes it's not all that practical.
Mostly, I daydream about the story in my head and never write it out.
Sometimes, I get inspired and start actually writing stuff, then run out of steam before ever getting to the third pre-planned plot point, after getting sidetracked into diversion after diversion and totally writing myself into a corner.

Also it might help if you tell the story to another person, and then save what you told them.
