Rising Zan - The Samurai Gunman
Dec. 2nd, 2007 07:36 pm"Once upon a time
A blue-eyed boy from the old west
learned one of life's cruelest lessons...
that evil was bigger than his gun..."
This is how Samurai Gunman starts: Johnny, a young adventure-seeker from a Gold Rush era Old West town, finds that people are vanishing when they get near the ravine outside of town. He goes out to investigate, and is promptly attacked by ninjas, who leave him with an X-shaped scar across his face. Infuriated, he goes home and demands that his father's old Asian friend take him to learn the mysteries of the sword as well as the gun.
Eight years later, Johnny takes his new name, Zan. He returns home, determined to prove himself... not just a hero, not just a superhero, but a Super Ultra Sexy Hero.
Armed with sword and gun, you blast your way through training dummies and ninja and enemies who speak entirely in "GWUH GWUH BUUUHHH" noises, because they are stupid and evil and do not GET real lines. Loud rock music plays as blood goes PSSSSS out of ninjas, which the bad guys fire at you out of cannons. Occasionally there is a boss fight, and when you beat the boss the soundtrack goes "SAMU-RAI GUNMAAAAAAAAAN! JOHNNY NO MOOOORE!" as you execute a button-mashing hyper combo finish on the ass of the defeated enemy.
Then you rescue townspeople and they ask Johnny why the hell he's calling himself "Zan" and what the hell is wrong with his retarded outfit.
... You know. I can't say after the limited playtime I've gotten with it if Rising Zan is a good game. It plays a bit like a Proto-Devil-May-Cry, getting hit makes you less of a Hero and lowers your Hero bar which I do not know what it does, and the controls are sorta awkward. I only just found out that you can use the analog sticks, which trades easy combo moves for quicker reaction times. There are problems with Rising Zan.
I cannot yet say if this is a GOOD game. But god help me... this is an AWESOME game. Big goofy grins all around. Rising Zan is for the Playstation (yes, the original one, it's dated-looking) and costs like fifty cents plus shipping on Amazon.
The goddamn INTRO SEQUENCE was worth fifty cents, I think.
