2018 Year-End Wrap Up Post

Perhaps I'm posting this a touch earlier than I should. I know there's a day left, but maybe I just want to get it over with.

2017 was a whirlwind year that blasted by at warp speed, and in my wrapup post back then I noted:

"It's December and I still feel like it's August or something. Did we actually lose autumn? I think we lost autumn."

Well, I figured out where autumn 2017 went. Like every other scrap of time I've lost in my life, it was hiding in 2018. Bundles of days from years past snuck off to the future year 2018 to lay in wait. I opened a door in late August and a cascade of weeks came flying out and blew me back to May.

The year 2018 was the longest decade of my life, and I'm not actually convinced it will end in 2019. We're going to flip the calendar page and discover we've somehow looped around to the previously-unknown month of Second January.

If that happens I will need you all to join me on a quest to destroy the moment and revive the concept of a future. Please bring a signed note listing dietary needs, favored weapon and preferred armor weight. If there's more than eight of us we qualify as a raid and we can use the special lane.

Ridiculous length aside though, on a personal level this year ... wasn't actually terrible? There was depression and sadness, yes. There was also the magic of Hypnosis, the game so hilariously odd I learned to export videos to Youtube simply to preserve it. There was reconnection with people I thought I'd never see again. There was joy and dreams and love. There was Santa-face cake.

There was also tiredness and fatigue and existential horror, of course. 2018 was a difficult and often terrible year for sentient living creatures based on Earth. However in the small fantasy-style burrow I inhabit mentally, the good side drowned out the bad.

To that end I don't have any grand declarations or resolutions this year because I don't feel anything is particularly 'off' or wrong with my personal mindset or way of living. The things I can control in my life are good and good for me, and the things I can't control... I try not to worry about overmuch right now for the sake of my blood pressure.

I recognize of course that this is not how progress is made. Eventually we're all going to have to get really mad and start trashing the place if we want to effect actual change in society. I just don't have the energy right now. I don't want to think of this as "giving up", though.

I'm just going to try to make 2019 a bit better for whoever I can, as much as I can. Bring light and smiles to the people I love, selfishly focus on the people and things closest to me.
Same procedure as every year.

Right now I feel there is no better metaphor for the state I'm in than this: A clown, tired and a bit forlorn, earnestly asking the world to look inside themselves and find sincerity again.
Happily, this already exists in musical form.

With that we can say goodbye, good riddance and please go away forever to this century of 2018.

I THUS DECLARE:
2018 IS OVER
2018 IS OVER
2018 IS OVER

I'm pretty sure this is the plot of the Can You Escape games.

Anyway, as always, the world is a stormy place and most living creatures are getting hurt out there, but we've built a lovely little shelter and we have a cozy fire and some blankets and hot cocoa.

Keep on being you, we'll keep on being us, and here's to continuing to bring what light and warmth we can to each other and to those around us.

It is more than ready to be done, this year.

Also, unrelated, but I feel a bit smug that I guessed it would be Puddles Pity Party behind the chosen link.

That's also true, so I should feel a lot less smug.

Hah! I also guessed it was going to be Puddles Pity Party but I didn't expect it to be the same video I linked in my own post earlier in the week!

Happy New Year!
