Christmas time is here, by golly...
Christmas, for me, really doesn't mean anything special or sentimental. Basically, it means gifts and suchlike. Although, for no good reason, the song "Silver Bells" can just about bring me to tears with nostalgia even though I have no reason at all to be nostalgic about Christmastime in the city. Just another quirk of me.
Anyway, the parents passed me $400 and said "knock yourself out", so I did. And blew it all in a day.
Is it weird to be intensely wracked with guilt and regret because you bought stuff for yourself with money given to you? I feel... I don't know. This happens every time I buy something for myself, I feel like I should've bought something different, or held onto the money, or bought things for someone else. And I can't control my spending well at all. All reasons I should never be allowed to HAVE money. I'm no good at it.
So I bought a bunch of stuff. In spite of feeling bad about it, I'm sort of pleased with what I got out of it.
Here's the list, mostly so I can try to justify this to myself.
DVDs:
Item: Super Dimensional Fortress Macross box sets 1-3.
Why? Macross. The foundation (the only tolerable) bit of Robotech. THE source for cliches to swipe for your space anime. Spawner of transforming toys. And I've never seen the real thing? Hell with that. *buy*
Item: Looney Tunes Golden Collection
Why? C'mon. Four DVDs of cartoons that I grew UP on. When I say I want to be a cartoon more than anything else at all, this is WHY. 50 something 'toons and a barrel of extras, I can totally deal with that... and it has Duck Amuck, which they air way, way too infrequently for the work of genius that it is. (I consider it the funniest Daffy Duck piece ever.) *buy*
Games:
Item: Disgaea
Why? To shut people up who keep telling me to buy this game, mostly. There's enough of them that this is a justifiable expense.
Item: Guilty Gear XX
Why? Quite aside from the fact that it's a 2D fighter not by Capcom or SNK, and a VERY good looking one (yeah, I know), it's also got Dizzy, who I've been informed I must see for... a number of reasons. Also, yay fighting game. I've wanted this for a while.
Item: Freedom Force
Why? Less than ten bucks for a game where you can throw comic-book-style supervillians through buildings? Well DUH. Of course I'll buy it. Excessive property damage is MY forte.
Item: Beyond Good and Evil
...This is really the big one. I fell in love with the demo, and...
Look, this game has the best artistic vision I've seen in YEARS. It's designed to be simple, clearly, but it's got...
...I'll write an entire essay about the demo later. I need to sleep worse than I thought.
Books:
The books don't need justifying, but here they are anyway...
Paths of the Dead by Stephen Brust, Ender's Shadow by Orson Scott Card, The Diamond Age by Neil Stephenson, and Godel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofsomething.
