Streaming with Sqrlmog: Mission Statement
Nov. 6th, 2019 06:57 amThere are some things here that I want to lay out in the open.
First, what am I doing?
I'm going to pick up a Disney+ account (on the 12th, when it comes out) and start randomly spinning the dial to select something to write about. If it's a movie, I'll watch the whole thing. If it's a series, I'll watch as much as seems appropriate. Then I come over here and type. I'll tag these "Streaming with Sqrlmog" so it'll be nice and formalized. I like a slightly rigid form in my writing projects.
Cool. Why?
A number of reasons.
- I'm disillusioned with the current state of video gaming and feel like I could use a longer break from it.
- I feel like I should watch more movies and TV.
- You folks keep saying you'll read anything I write and I want to cruelly test that by outputting 3,500 words about 1971 film "The Million Dollar Duck".
- I'm slightly addicted to blogging and feel like I really need to get back on it, but I haven't felt like I had anything to say. This at least gives me a subject line to bounce on.
Okay, why Disney+?
I miss liking Disney.
Over a period longer than my lifetime, they've gone from 'beloved guardians of children's entertainment' to something a lot less fun and enjoyable.
They're a monolith of shiny facetless consumerism with a nozzle that pumps out oatmeal-thick Movie Product now, and I feel like I want to run my hands over that monolith and feel for cracks in the facade, to see if I can pry it open and get what I liked as a kid back, to see if I can find what's good to love in the newer stuff, and to sigh at their missteps along the way.
Also I haven't seen all the Marvel movies yet. I didn't say -I- wasn't a consumerist product-slurper.
I could really do this with any streaming service (Netflix, Hulu, VRV, DC Universe... we subscribe to those) but I'm starting with Disney+. Before long I might decide to branch out and throw stuff from those in too, but Disney is the biggest Cultural Touchstone out there. If I can't find something to write about in their product history, what am I even doing writing about stuff at all?
You gonna tear some crap apart?
Nah I'm aiming for respectful but goofin' here. I'm not very caustic anymore.
How often?
I'm aiming for one post biweekly. Expect more frequently to start because novelty, and then I'll start trailing off. Maybe this experiment will last a couple months and I'll go back to playing MMOs in my free time.
"Streaming with Sqrlmog" huh?
Ever try to find a word that means anything remotely like "viewing" or "watching" that starts with X? Anyway this way if I get back into gaming, I can gently transition back to Twitch streaming too.
We're good?
We're good.
