xyzzysqrl: (Hot blooded with a sense of justice!)
Today I finished the last of the Assassin's Creed IV releases, the two DLC that came out. Freedom Cry is a... well, it's what happens when they just dump all the Animus shenanigans in favor of telling a historical human drama about slavery.

Man, that... that is a heavy topic. It also served to motivate me pretty well in a sense. Usually in Assassin's Creed games I'm not too bothered about being seen, because I just hack-and-slash the guards to bits and then blend in again. In Freedom Cry, you're often liberating the slave population and when things go south they start murdering them to prevent an uprising. Because I have a lot of empathy for virtual characters this instantly took me from "Screw around" mode to "NEVER BE SEEN, EVER." mode. So well done there.

Aveline was a much shorter, lighter experience. Three missions starring the heroine of Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation, which I have not yet played and really should! I didn't realize it was part of the 3 series at first because my Steam copy doesn't have a numeral. Oops. Anyway, her mission was very... Prince of Persia? Port-au-Prince of Persia? It was a welcome change of pace, anyway. Plus there was an interesting tidbit that may or may not fit into the lore of the series... whatever that lore is, nowadays.

I love the series to death and I'm having trouble keeping it all straight.

Oh well, looks like next time I play an Assassin's Creed it'll be New Orleans instead of Orleans. At this rate I'm never going to get to France.

I've also been dabbling more in ACIV proper. It turns out once you're done with the Assassin's Creed game that's in there, there's like a whole second game that takes place on a pirate ship and that part is actually pretty fun.

There's like this built in Facebook game about managing your trading fleet, and that's kinda neat too (so, to be clear: The in-game frame story is that you're playing as beta tester of a pirate game which now has a second layer of pirate game built into it) and ... I dunno, I've been having some fun, sailing around and finding pretty things and generally being a dork of the carribean.

(Speaking of dorks, man this game loves reffing Monkey Island. I've heard the "swordfighting is kinda like making love" conversation, there's a dude named Mancomb Seepgood, and at one point one of Kenway's friends growls "NOTHIN' LIKE THE HOT WINDS OF HELL BLOWIN' IN YOUR FACE", so we are totally in LeChuck areas here. Geez.)

Anyway I will probably move on to something else in a day or two.
