Apr. 22nd, 2010 05:37 amAs you may know, the woof and I spend a lot of time watching videos and playing games on our personal computer boxes. Sometimes, however, the wires shoot inappropriate things into our screens and we have to reboot, which is like hosing the inside of the screens off.
The biggest problem lately has been this: Whenever we play games and then swap to videoes, or to a different kind of game, we'd get big staticky green-and-black lines up and down the video display. But ONLY on certain... layers. As in, over the video and over icon text, but NOT on the wallpaper or in web browsers, UNLESS those web browsers were showing a certain kind of text... etc.
We got irritated by this issue, and then thought about what to do. No source online was conclusive. Some said it was a video card issue. Some said driver issue. Some said DirectX issue. So we tweaked DirectX to no avail, and played with drivers. Now we're trying replacing the video cards.
...Admittedly, we don't strictly NEED to replace the cards... but our old ATI Radeon 3800 has fallen off the bottom of various "compare these two cards" menus on hardware evaluation websites. That's always a sign you need new hardware.
So, lo, we have ordered new ATI Radeon 5670s, which promise better DirectX support (which might help) and better driver support (which might help) and the ability to run City of Heroes in the coming Ultra Shiny Super Special Awesome Mode (which will be cool).
Now that we have bought these cards, and I have explained our issues, I'm expecting someone to swoop in and explain to us that we are idiots because this is a simple problem which is easily fixed by BLARRRRRHURFADURF. But we are idiots with new graphics cards. Isn't that what really matters?
