Ramenbox Review: Don't know if want.
Mar. 16th, 2010 12:58 pmI'll be forthright and honest: I love spinach. Always have. I once attempted to clean out a salad bar's supply of fresh whole-leaf spinach. I will GRAZE that stuff. So when I saw Shiitake Spinach Ramen up on Ramenbox I lunged at that. Four servings a packet seemed like a good idea for me.
Having actually eaten it, though, a couple of things hit me.
A: It is impossible for me to eat this ramen without having a certain Star Trek moment replay in my head on constant loop.
B: This stuff is STRONG-smelling. Like, it smells medicinal-strong. And look at that dude on the package, back at the ramenbox link. Do you think he's a real doctor? I don't.
C: These are some thick, chewy noodles. I even added extra hot water and waited a while longer to see if they were underdone, but no. They're meant to be that chewy.
D: I almost loved these. They were tasty and slightly tangy. But every time I started to enjoy them, this.. odd, harsh, almost sharp-bitter flavor kept floating to the surface. It got irritating. I'm not sure what it was, but it made me squirm a bit and really sapped my enjoyment.
So. ALMOST a success. I'll try the other three packets over time, with variations on cooking, to see if I can identify that slightly nauseating flavor-undertone. Did I maybe not rinse the bowl enough? I dunno.
