I'm with ya, sqrl. Realism really doesn't get my goat. Why does Link have to be gritty and realistic? ...It's LINK. Then again, my preconceptions of him were set with that horrible/wonderful cartoon of the 80s. You know, the "Well EXCUUUUSE ME, Princess" version.
I really liked Ocarina of Time, because it was zany as all hell -- but only with a peanut gallery. And that's probably the ONLY reason I liked it so much. Realism didn't work out real well there, I didn't think.
I bought Wind Wa(n)ker very warily, expecting insta-hatred of the Bobble-Head character designs, but then discovered that they were so exquisitely animated and lively that one couldn't HELP but love them. Everything about them was brilliant and bright, and the expressions were just precious. Those designs don't stand out for crap on a magazine page, or in a screenshot -- but in action, they're astoundingly wonderful. ...As cartoons tend to be.
