Well this was a good time. A top-down shooter disguised cunningly as an action-RPG, Crystalis is all about taking your elemental swords out into a field and zapping enemies with them. There is a plot, but it takes a while to get lined up and situated, to the point that when the plot made its grand appearance I was a bit blindsided.

The main boss of the piece turns into a big buff dragon too, so y'know... I spent that entire fight going "OH NO HE'S HOT. WHY IS HE HOT THIS IS UNFAIR."

Uh. Aside from that... good spritework, okay music. Really good dungeon maze design. The game's only flaw was over-ambition, some of the later areas and boss fights blaaaughed into a sprite-flickering mess of slowdown and that frankly happens to a lot of late-era NES games.

This was a well-regarded classic of the era that I just... somehow never found time to play. Now I have.

Only a special breed of warrior has the lifelong training necessary to endure those reptilian wiles, the stamina necessary to prevail.

They are known as... dragons layers.

I don't know how I missed this one the first go-around, but I did and it's been on a nebulous to-play list so it's nice to hear it holds up.
