Gas stoves are great for two things: warming tortillas on an open flame and using a wok. Otherwise, electric stoves will work just fine.
My old roomie used to light her cigarettes on our gas stove. One time, she turned the knob, leaned over the burner, and a giant pfwoomp later, she was missing an eyebrow.
But her cigarette was lit, and I guess that's what matters.
